@Insider So then, sir, what magnification do most graders use? Just curious. I use a 4X for my electronics work and it's plenty good enough, but the inspection people use much higher magnification.

Professional grading room - mostly in the 4X-10X range and some w/o any magnification.

    Collectors - 10X -14X.

My phone camera works just fine don't know what its level is you just need to know how to do it I've used it to spot most of my RPM finds.

Collectors more like 200-2000x as they blow up coins to be the size of dinner plates and giant monitors LOL

I agree, for most things 4x is plenty good to see whatever I need to see. 10x if I really want a deep look, the USB microscopes, yeah, maybe they are easier than picking up a magnifying glass ever few seconds or so, but most people crank them way up and have no idea what they are looking at or for.

Insider, I really must say how appreciative I have been of your thoughtful and calm postings and explanations on the forum. I always realized you were very experienced in the coin grading community. But I like the transformation from visuals. I am serious .

Hmm - there is more to the value of grading and slabbing than the immediate financial value. He now has the satisfaction of knowing that he plucked a rather unique specimen from circulation and it is perserved nicely in a slab. the future value is likely to go up, and in 30 years, it will still be a nicely slabbed example with real retail value.

I doubt it its most likely going to go down hard with the thousands more 64's being certified for the future, most will be much better than this from original rolls.

FWIW - I find dimes the hardest coins to grade because of there size. I really have trouble with what nicks constitute to the grade and the silver dimes often have fields that have lines that to me look like wipes, but are part of the metal flow. That also is the worst portrait of Roosevelt. It barely looks like him!
