I think it'd be a great idea. Anyone who wants to steal the idea, feel free. Bring a little more hope to this industry. Ok, what I mean here is, kinda like how we have reviews for videogames(ign.com/gamespot.com) and electronics(cnet.com), Why don't we have review sites for coin types/grades/years? Ie. the future price appreciation, the overall look and feel, the demand, usage, etc?
The place for postings about coin investment is the Bullion Forum, not here. Believe it or not, there are many, many of us who collect coins for the pleasure it gives us, without regard to the monetary results, and Coin Chat is a place for us to discuss our hobby!
and where is that special section? Because if you are referring to bullion investing, that is completely different than Numismatic investing ( which I find an interesting topic for the "Coin Chat" section )
We do and we have had these all along. We do and we have had these all along. They are called magazines, weekly papers, books, news letters, web sites, auction sites/data, and experience.
I would say that any TPG meets what you were asking about BNB. Of course some are better than others. But that is what they do - review the coin and give their opinion of it. The only thing I can think of that you mention that we do not have is a service that would offer potential price appreciation. I used to do it - but my crystal ball is broken
There are also many books out there that serve as reviews. One that comes to mind quickly is the VAM Book for Morgan and Peace Dollars. It goes over each date and mint mark and reviews the quality of the issue. From strike and luster to rarity at each grade. It doesn't go into specific price numbers, but a lot can be learned about what to expect from a certain date.
Not sure but I think what your discribing is sort of a web site or forum here or somewhere where coins are labled as to things like present value, pat 1, 5 etc. years value, 5 year estimated value, quantity minted, quantity and/or types of errors, popularity, Companies that make Albums for them. Also, many other comments per coin by dealers and/or collectors. Sort of like when you go to a Google or Yahoo Stock Market viewer and enter a stock letters and get all that sort of stuff including the past years values. Would be sort of like a Excel Spreadsheet with columns for all sorts of information rather than looking up all over the place for each item. If this is what your saying, it sure would be a massive web site. Imagine all that info for each coin ever made. It would be the combined information of all these coin forums, all coin books and naturally all the great deals on the HSNetwork.
Very true, David Bowers book (Guide to Morgan Dollars) also reviews each date/mm, reviews the quality, offers opinions on value and price guide, and even goes into detail on estimates of remaining population. Imo to put a site together that would incorporate all of that info for every series/denomination would be a massive project.
As mentioned earlier in this thread, Q. David Bowers has a series of "Red Books" for each series of US coins that has the general characteristics for each date and mint mark. I have a few of these books. Fabulous references! These are all subjective or speculative things, and can't be quantified.
Not to mention a lot of the information out there is copyrighted...so it would be very hard to assemble such a site without doing ALL the research yourself.
or you could let Q. David Bowers do your research for you and just buy (or go to the library) and read the books. IMHO he is far more accurate and more credible than any website.
Oh, I agree. I was saying that a lot of the good information out there is in books and under copyright...so if anyone tried to assemble such a website it would be very hard. I use almost exclusively books and rely very little on the internet.
Of course a fact can not be copyrighted - and while I know some of the big guys in coin collecting strongly disagree with that, and fight it, they really can't do much about it. I guess if they want to sue you they will just have to prove that they were lieing, and that it really isn't what they said it was! LOL Speedy
