    Possible new Error??? (pic added)

    Hello again.

I have recently aquired a bunch of coins. I have for almost 6 days now, studied books, the internet & these coins ofcourse since my last post. Very interesting I must say, I've learned a lot about history its self...who ever payed attention in history classes in school! LOL

I have the Red Book, the Blue Book & a book that details how to grade. Along with these books & the internet, I have a 4x magnifing glass & a pin point light.

Now, actually about 3 hours ago, I found a coin with a "1" not as a "1". It is a die error for sure. This coin would be graded a EF-40 atleast (in my opinion), so the details are very distinct...this "1" mess up is very obvious another words. It looks like a vertically stretched ">" & is half the normal horitontal width of a normal "1". Last 3 hours I have looked up this error for the year & denomination & found NOTHING at all, not even this variety of error occuring (imagine my face doing the big question mark, confusion, excitement expression all at once!)

My question in which I am hoping you kind coin veterans & those alike can help me with is this:

#1- Have you ever heard, seen, read...anything of this nature on a coin before?

#2- What steps should I take to reporting this baby? I know I have to have it certified, but are there factors or suggestions I should consider before doing so?

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this & any comments, whatever their nature may be, that come my way.
My books & research can't & haven't given me advice on steps to take.

BTW, things I should avoid doing would be helpful too.

    Thanks again!

EDIT: Here is a pic, I cropped & discolored only to show the error & nothing else (not sure what my best interests are...).

Yes, that is supposed to be a # after the 5. Have you seen or heard anything like it? PLEASE input your knowledge. Thanks so much!

]Don't clean or rub any of the coins. Only hold them by their edges. Don't slide them around on a surface. Don't sell them until you know what you have. Don't forget to have fun!

Well then how can we help??...if it is a dime...we might think its a nickel and then we would mess up telling her its a new error or an old error...

From the little photo it doesn't look like a real error but I can't tell from the photo.

As has been suggested - please post a larger pic of the whole coin. But if I understand your description correctly, and from what little I can tell in the pic - my guess is you have a coin with damage - not an error.

It is not unheard of for the digits or letters on a coin to be pushed right to the side by a coin rolling machine. I'm guessing that's what happened with your coin.
