In the area that you collect, be it US, Ancient, or World (we can narrow it down to a certain country/provenance for ancient and world), what do you feel are coins that are always interesting and nice to look at, yet are quiet, meaning, they don't have much of a value nor much of an audience? stainless
Ive been collection alot of south american coins. Ones from Peru, Brazil, & Ecuador. There is alot of really nice looking coins and some very cheap too. I dont read about them much on coin forums.
Civil War and store cards from Pittsburgh. I'm always pulling my hair out just trying to locate the next one. Sometimes I feel like I'm literally the only person trying to collect these, and who knows, I might be! Guy~
I collect laminated wheat cents. Most people look at them as an eyesore. I find them very interesting and that no two are ever alike. They're resonably cheap to very cheap, especially at flea markets in junk boxes. I am currently working on completing a full set, its not easy, I've got a long way to go. I have no idea if anyone has ever completed a full set...
I'm saving the cover series presidential dollars. It seems that no one else is collecting them. They started minting at 50,000 per president and have lowered the mintage to 40,000 in 2009. I kind of like the history but it appears that I'm virtually alone on liking this mint offering.
Roman lead tesserae. The prices have a dramatic range. I've paid as little as $2 and as much as $150.
quiet coins When I was in the Navy, I would gather a complete set of coins from every country I was in. They are all in mylar holders and are all 39 years old or older. I consider these my "quiet coins".:smile
I always felt that not a whole lot of people pay attention to the V Nickels, or the Shield Nickels. The 3 cent nickels are the same way. Most of the hype is around Morgans, everybody and their brother (AND ME) love morgans, but I feel many people over look they beauty, that lay right in front of them, if they would just look...
I've been getting into U.S.-Philippines coins lately, seems like a relatively quiet area vs. what I have been collecting (Indian Cents, Lincolns and U.S. Type).
It would have to be Canadian large cents for me. There are thousands upon thousands of varietys. To give you an idea, there are more varietys then American large cents, just tons. So you can cherry pick those relatively easy, mostly because there isn't much demand for them... It'll go up. It already has, and once the charlton catalgue comes out with a updated catalogue on Canadian Large cents like they did with the 5 cent silvers this year.. Those variety prices will soar. EDIT: Welcome to Cointalk ChirsC!!!
I don't know if they really count, but I'll say VAMs. While there are a fair amount of VAM collectors out there, I would say the majority of collectors really aren't familiar with VAMs, and while there a select number of VAMs that sell for big time premiums, the majority really have no premium. But I find them fascinating :smile.
Started picking up some rupees again , I love them Just like you , I have started to pick up various coins from South America. The Peruvian pieces , as you mentioned are quite affordable for fantastic conditions. I also like the Guatemalan pieces. A lot of the coins from South America are simply delicious , especially the stuff that was minted earlier on .
Portuguese coins, largely ignored even in Portugal, but the 20th century coins were quite nicely designed and rather pricey in higher grades.
Well it started as a old Soviet USSR Items (Old..LOL pre 1993) Bills and such with Lenin on them.. It morphed into a working collection of World Communist Nations.. They have come and gone, a few still around.. so it can be fun.. I ran into some cool proof Olympic USSR coins that are very nice..no pictures.. yet.. sorry, But here are a couple.. Yes.. One is a UN Medal, But is was from an important Diplomat ..
Ah, I am 100% Portuguese.. even worked on a tuna boat as a kid.. I might look into those.. Any you think I might want to look at first?
Stay away, forget I said anything about them. No Audra, no Maria, nothing to see. Move along.... http://www.scottishmoney.net/portugal/portugal.html
