what spot do you refer to? Credibility is credibility and it generally comes over time as people speak their opinions and others digest them.

If someone comes along who knows more and shares it, then he will be respected as well, but that doesn't affect me.

My standing, as you refer to it, in this forum will never be affected by anyone other than myself.

You can get any "vibe" you want, that's purely your perception of the world. As for your credibility... well... your words will speak for themselves.

I Guess I would be a Newbe, Only a few years worth of collecting. But I have to say that This site and the Pro's/Old timers have saved me more money and time... I can't say thanks enough...
To all the other new collectors.. Read.. read everything you can.. This site will save you.. Ask questions AFTER you do all the research YOU can..

Also some of the chats and such can be such a source of humor...
The first thing I learned was to STOP buying EVERYTHING I saw ... I had a huge hoard of Stuff but very few gems..
Now I have a MUCH better Collection and More Money to spend... Thanks to ALL!!

I know when one registers for the forum, there is a choice to display age in some situations. I don't recall seeing anyone age displayed. Where is an example. I blocked mine as I thought most did.

Boxer, you're a perfect example of how this forum treats people who are respectful of others. People don't heavily comment on your posts, and they don't have to correct a lot of your facts, but most importantly, they don't have to defend themselves from your constant whining of discrimination or some sort of being slighted. You post, we decide and you get treated fairly.

When anyone, regardless of age comes to a forum and starts to spout off like they know everything and then backs it up with basically nothing, they will and IMHO should be subject to whatever ridicule they receive.

Age is a silly issue-- YEARS DONT MAKE YOU EXPERIENCED!!! Experience does! If you have been around coins from your birth and know them inside and out and your 18 I will respect your views, if your 65 and have been around coins for 12 hours I wont, and the same goes the other way around!
I find lots of older people dont respect younger people as much because they think there is no way they could know as much. I know in the sailing courses I have taken the first day all the 40-60 year old guys treat me like crap, then they see I know what im doing and can handle the boat as well if not better than them and their attidue generally changes. Give us young kids a little slack, we're trying! (okay not all of us, but give those who do some slack :p) PS: Over all though.... I agree with you old fogies.... our generation is a lost cause and a waste of space in general. :p

I have 2 words for you.... WHO CARES???

There is always going to be someone who knows more then you do about anything you do in life. I for one am here to learn new things and to pass on my knowledge on to others. I don't care what people think about me because that's not what I am here for. If someone wants to be a respected member of this community... earn it... make informative posts, participate in constructive threads where someone else can actually learn something they didn't know before... that earns you respect no matter of age, race, or gender. To suggest otherwise is incorrect.

On sites like these you are represented by the words you type... by the content that you provide to the community... peroid.

My take on it? I don't see an issue overall. I primarily stick to reading threads that interest me or teach me something, unless there's someone else I'm able to help out. Or I have a question myself.

I didn't hide my age in my profile. I'm 29. And I sense that there are some 'young people', that may have some sort of social disfunction, who constantly want attention, be it good or bad, for the sake of being in the spot light on a forum.
Most people aren't looking for drama, they aren't looking for the spotlight and aren't here to turn this into a soap opera worrying about what other people 'might' think. That's an old past time primarily favored by the female gender.
I'm here to help, or gain coin knowledge. That's it. I'm not here to analyze people's moods, or keep track of who said what to who. Or us vs. them. I'm here a lot and I don't notice anything. I don't have a problem with the old timers. I usually get a kick out of them because they remind me of my grandfather giving me a hard time sometimes.

Other than that, I get a feel for people's general personalities and that's about all I need. I don't worry about it beyond that.

You know, there's A LOT of hobbies out there that ANY kid would love. Not just coin collecting. If the parents would actually show them. Kids are usually anxious to learn stuff and see new, cool things. It just takes somebody willing to take the time to introduce them to all that's out there. It can be any family member. There's a lot of dead beat parents who don't want to deal with their kids. So the kids never have a chance to know whats out there or get interested in anything.

That's a good story. But it's not helping the argument in the original post here.

I've had times where I would go to shows and the dealer would be hard on me mainly due to my age.. I didn't even ask him a question, I just looked through his currencies and he grunted at me because he thought I was going to mess everything up because I'm young... Those were his words..

    He said:

"Your going to mess everything up because you're young," or something similar? (but he used your age)?

I'm not following what you mean. ?

A dealer at my first show that happened to be in Arcardia(First time I met up with Illini420) who was very old specifically said while I was looking through his currency pile, "You're going to mess everything up because you're young, let me do it".. The sad part was, I didn't even really start going through them so there was no way he could have judged fairly. I thought it was ageism and found it very patronizing and rude and figure this is a good example to mention..

Not to say all of the older dealers are like this, actually, most of them aren't from my experience thus far, but for some reason, those few bad apples stick out.

I didn't even read much past the first few posts because many of you quit making sense. But let me try to get in this one before the lock ;)

Anyways, I haven't encountered too much of this issue on the Forums because for the first thing you see about a person is what they write in their posts and not their age/appearance.

When I first started going to coin shows though, some dealers (not all) pretty much ignored me when I was browsing their tables or upon asking to see a coin in their case would say "you know how much that coin is, right??" presumably based on my relatively low age compared to most other show attendees. However, I rarely run into that sort of thing now that the dealers who matter to me know who I am and have a general idea about my coin budget.
