Okay. So I wrote Ken Potter asking if he had a handful of Class 6 that he would sell, as I thought having them in hand might help me get a grasp. He wrote back that he did not collect them and added he did not think the class had been properly diagnosed. If any of you think they have been properly diagnosed, then what is that diagnosis?

Class VI doubling is sort of a mystery but I'll give you my theory on the subject.

I think is has to do with the die and the hub not being placed square and secured tightly in the hubbing press. As the hub is pressed into the die; the tool which is out of alignment rocks slightly adjusting naturally to square due to the pressure exerted -wallowing out some devices in the process. But then again that would make Class VI a Class VIII or a unique form of tilted Hub doubling.

    Justafarmer-
Thanks for replying. How can you determine class VI from a worn die. I see many cents where there is extra thickness, but I'm always told it's just a worn die. By extra thickness, does that mean width, or does it mean from the surface up? I've also seen some where a letter or number was thicker than normal from the surface up.
