So, I’ve been organizing all of my old coins the last week or so (I don’t really have any great coins, just stuff I collected as a kid and have plucked from circulation over the years, and my wife decided to bring out a box that her dad left for our kids a few years ago. I knew she had it but never looked through it and today had a chance to check them out. He was born in 1919 and only died a few years ago at 95 years old and was very frugal and I had to laugh looking at the containers he used to keep all of his coins… Old medicine bottles full of Morgan and Peace Dollars, other ones filled with silver quarters Silver Eagle Dollar coins, cigar tubes full of Barber, Mercury and Franklin silver dimes, a tube of Buffalo nickels etc... he re-used old Half-Dollar wraps and put Liberty, Franklin and Kennedy silver Halves in them. Over all most of them are in average condition, though there were few Morgan Dollars in really nice shape but the cool surprises were a 1898 $10 Gold Eagle, 1852 Quarter Eagle and a 2006 Gold Buffalo dollar coin all in really great shape Here’s a photo of about a third of the stash (and apparently my wife's siblings also received a similar stash, so I have no idea what other yet-to-be-discovered items there might be … ) Was fun looking through them, kind of feels like finding buried treasure or something
How wonderful! This collection certainly made it into the right hands. Enjoy it and don’t forget to give us a little “taste” now and then.
Take a look at the price written on the quarter eagle 2X2..... It is marked $35.00...... I bet he bought that coin in the 1980’s.
I love when friends bring me a bunch of coins to look through because they know I'm a collector. Haven't found anything special yet, but the fun is in the hunt. BTW, I still have coins in my old prescription containers, so what's wrong with that? LOL
My son-in-laws family had a big ranch here in Texas. About 1000 or more acres bought or claimed in the 1800's. Eventually, some of it was sold in pieces for different uses. There were about 30 acres left at the end. My daughter and her family lived in the "old" house - pot belly stove and all. When they sold and moved to their new home the son-in-law was removing what personal family property there was left. He came to our house one night with a rugged old bag he found in the floor of a shed. It was full of silver dollars and silver half dollars. I looked through it and didn't find anything rare, but it sure was fun.
Reminds me of the "Saddle Ridge Hoard" gold coins found here in California. All these beautiful gold coin buried in two paint cans
Those are some really nice coins there. Post some photos (Both obverse and reverse of the coins) when you get a chance. We'd love to see them!
Awesome! And only a third!!! That's a lot of silver Let us know if you find any key dates or something special
Aside from the Gold Coins, most all of the stuff was just average grade, circulated stuff that he’d saved. Seems like he was more of a "saver" than a "collector" because there's no real organization to any of it. A cigar tube filled with mostly late-date Mercury dimes, and another with worn Buffalo nickels etc..a few nice Morgan Dollars one of them an 1889 but unfortunately NOT the “CC” version, and a couple of better date, but really worn coins like a couple of 1934 Washingtons and a not rare date but in really nice shape 1939. A couple of good dates, but worn 1905-O and 1913 Barber Halves.. Some of the coins were in nice condition like some of the Walking Liberty Halves and a few Buffalo Nickels but just not any of the better dates.. Fun lookin through. Them though
What a great collection! I recently inherited a portion of my grandfather's collection, as well. His were just bags and bags of loose coins, lol. My mother started putting into Whitman folios 40+ years ago, but the passion just wasn't there, and she just started plugging coins anywhere. Real messy. The Frisbee on the left has a bag of Indigenous People pennies mixed with wheats, I'm able to fill most of the penny book. The Frisbee on the right, has a bag of mixed silver and '45 or earlier nickels. I have bags and bags like that to go through, sigh! Tough work, but someone's got to do it. Enjoy your new treasures, my condolences you acquired them the way i did.
Every day! It doesn't get better than having coins at work, then my grandfather's coins when i get home, lol.
Oh man, do I. I see them when i close my eyes, when I'm taking a shower, they seem to be everywhere, lol. (How'd you know? )
