I've been collecting usa 90% silver with the primary goal of stacking as much silver as possible with the least possible premium. that has slowly turned me on to looking for better condition coins and government bullion like ASE and maple leafs. I have been seeing more and more mexican and Canadian silver in the groups I frequent but haven't purchased because I am finally getting comfortable doing the math and picking good lots of usa stuff. I wouldn't want to misjudge and pay so much or buy a quality that would mean I'm either stuck with it forever or have to take a big loss if I need to move it. That said, I finally bit the bullet and bought my first Mexican lot and I see a lot more in my future. my favorite piece is the 5 peso with the cuauhtemoc Aztec chef head. what I'm looking for is suggestions of other foreign coins I may be interested in that fit the junk silver category with low premiums. as much as I like the few mexican coins I bought they seem to carry quite a premium. with the exception of the libertads I wasn't expecting that or I wouldn't have gotten attached. for instance the 5 peso I like has a current melt value of $22 but seems to sell for $45+ I would also be open to suggestions of groups to learn and buy/sell/trade. I currently belong to a few fb groups but it seems like it's always the same few dealers offloading their rejects that then get passed back and forth over and over by the little guys like myself.
grab a restrike Thaler? Those are plentiful and are silver, but also brilliant and reminiscent of older historical designs
This is a super popular design and has always had a slight premium. It is tough to find older world coins with higher silver content .900 fine or better for lower premiums. If you don't mind lower silver content or modern silver coins, you may be able to find some nice varieties with lower premiums. Check with your LCS, they often have their box of silver junk world coins.
I've always liked European crowns of the Latin Monetary Union standard - 25 grams of .900 silver. These would be mostly from France, Italy, Belgium, Spain, etc., mostly 19th century. These are abundant and can often be found with low premiums. Lot of variety - different rulers, etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin_Monetary_Union Here's an array of low grade French crowns in my collection (the stray Ethiopian birr is not of the LMU standard - it is heavier). They have about $12 worth of silver now: Spanish 5 pesetas are fun too - King Alfonso XIII went from a new born to a boy, 1888-1899 on crowns and minors:
