Umm - a lot of the coins are NGC graded. And I do not think the first 1909 is overgraded - just a weak strike for the grade. Some of the 1909's can be very poorly struck. I am interested in seeing if Kanga got this from a specific dealer or from a show. I know he gets coins at shows, just not sure about this batch.
Thank you for your comments Mark. I guess I just don't know the difference between poor struck & worn yet. I was comparing the 1906 to the 1909, and it looked like a two jump grade to me.
I buy almost exclusively from one dealer. He's well recognized within numismatics but not widely known by most collectors. His specialty is small cents. Because he sets up at all the big shows, he has access to a wide selection of other dealers and their coins. 80-90% of what I show in here comes through his hands. I give him my wantlist and he does his best to fill it. And the coins are solid for the grade. In the case of the IHCs I showed in this post, I asked for MS-65RB. The reason I got these 8 coins in one purchase is that he bought a set from another collector who apparently had a full set which these coins were part of. I can only guess what the keys/semi-keys looked like. All 8 IHCs cost less than $200 each. The 2-cent was an upgrade that I couldn't pass on and did NOT cost less than $200.
Like Desertgem, I also was thinking repunched date on the 1901. I bet the IHC's look really nice in hand. The 2 cent piece is the plain 5 date logo. Is your other 1865 a plain 5 or a fancy 5? If it's a fancy 5 then your worries of trying to sell would be over since you should have an example of each date type.
That explains a lot Kanga, I guess all it takes is money and someone to do your bidding. I'm not knocking you, if I had the dough, I might be doing the same thing, However; I always thought the fun part of collecting, was to do it yourself. I for one am always on the lookout for a good buy. When I hit, it makes me feel good and gives me something to add to my collection. If I miss, which is probably more often than not, I (hopefully) learn a lesson either not to do that again or pass on that particular dealer. I don't have a lot of money, but I love investing in coins, so when I make a good deal I really enjoy my hobby for what I feel is the name of the game.
Thanks for the heads-up. Since the Red Book doesn't list both types I completely missed that aspect. I've got Flynn's book but didn't check it. I do save a few sets for my own "thrill of the hunt". - My birthyear set: I need two more to complete it, a proof cent and a proof "AW" half. - A Classic Head half cent set: I think I'll have to start looking at raw coins to finish it. Can't find them slabbed in the grades I want. This will test my grading and cleaning detection capabilities. - A Capped Bust half dime set: Same problems as the half cents.
