This is the old coin I found. I can't spell the actual name of it. Anyone know what this coin would be valued at?

    Hi Sly,
That is a most unusual coin you have there. It looks like a 8 escudos piece for Spanish America. The interesting thing is that that denomination was struck in GOLD, and the piece you are showing us obviously is not struck in gold. It looks like cast lead, or oxidized silver!

It bears the name of the Spanish king Carolus, or Carlos IIII (IV). The originals in gold were struck at any of the new world spanish mints, Mexico, Popayan, Potosi, etc..
Can you read the mintmark at the bottom of the reverse?

    Regards,

    Eduard

PS- and welcome to the forum!

no not really. where the IN is on the bottom left it looks like an "o" and and "s" below the "o". The a dot and some strange flower thing. about like this one:

on mine where the "PJ" is there is nothing except a few small marks and it looks like it had been chisled down. you can tell. worn smooth. and, unless this picture is magnified, the "oS" part is very small and hard to read on mine and the thing underneath the coat of arms is a little off center as well compared to this picture.

The "S" topped by "O" mintmark is Santiago, Chile.
As i said, that is an 8 Escudos gold design on a non-gold planchet. Some contemporary fakes were struck in Platinum (people back then thought platinum was much less valuable than gold!). Question is, what is your example made of?
Did you find that, or is it bought?

I dont know about it being a fake because i have a coin just like that one, but in better condition. Like they said it looks like the gold 8 escudo piece, but its not. Mine has a gold tinge, mixed with silver. So im not sure what it is.

    spanish mexican 8 escudos

the spanish mexican 8 escudos featuring king charles IV...there weer 16 silver reales to one gold escudo...the two letters after deo are the assayers' initials & the next letter is the mint mark...if genuine this 87.5% gold coin should weigh 27.07 g & would contain .7616 oz of gold...it could be well worth $1000+ depending on price of gold & wear...i also have a silver that is not worth posting because of serious damage...

I had one in cast brass that somebody scraped the date from. There's a small R, undoubtably for replica, in the obverse field to the right of the bust.

Well I would calculate the specific gravity of the coin. Its non destructive, and should tell you what it is NOT. Good luck. Traci
