Hey all, thought I'd share, it's been quiet around here lately. here's pictures of my Whitman coin folders I inherited that got me started on collecting in 1981. they are worse for the wear, but the youngest is 63, and the oldest is 81 years old, they show their age. LOL first 3 top left are copyright 1940, winged liberty, Washington quarters number one, and buffalo nickel. Roosevelt dime is copyright 1946. Washington Quarter number two is copyright 1947. Lincoln cent number two is copyright 1948 Lincoln cent number one is copyright 1949 Bottom row Peace dollars is copyright 1950 The morgan albums are all copyright 1958 Now, pictures of the interior, but one caveat, I've abandoned using most of these folders and have newer ones I use. I sold off my silver in 2011 at the peak figuring I'd get around to buying nicer examples, but haven't, So whats left in these albums is either extras of the newer folders or in the case of silver, what I've collected from circulation after 2011. I'm a circulation collector. This is more about the folders than it is the coins. I have newer albums and folders for the main collection I'm working on. Any folder not show is empty.
Nice collection of albums. They were standard and essential back then. I still use some old Whitman folders. My IHC is Copyright 1940. It was my first album. It is covered with Scotch Tape from all the handling. My wife won't let me get rid of it.
All found in circulation, rolls e.t.c hope to complete it by the end of the year, speaking of that. Will this be the year I'll be able to get boxes all 7 days per week again.
This is my old nickel folder. The printed dates end on 1944. I assume its from 1944/1945. No coins in it - all my nickels are in a separate folder as they fall out of this one.
Does that Roosevelt album really have a copyright date of 1946, and a page for CLAD COINAGE STARTING 1965?
if the information page is still there, there's a copyright, and it's what I go by, like the earlier folders stop early though on labeled holes, since jeffersons start in 1938, it's a good bet it's likely the 1940 copyright one and it only goes a few years in advance, but I don't have one to compare it to to be sure. I know the 1952 copyright Jeff nickels folder stopped at 1960 D with two spots that weren't dated left in the folder. theres one that stops at 1959. and About the only thing I find consistent is the folder numbers, they have tones of copyright dates, I think there's ones for every year til the 1960s. the folders labeled spaces changed from year to year. Like the 9009 folder for jefferson nickels is going to say "Jefferson Nickels starting at 1938" but you'd need to open it to see the copyright and how many of the spots were labeled for that version and I don't know if the copyright even really helps all that much. I think they started these type of folders in 1940, and were doing one piece boards before that. The roosevelt dime one I posted is copyright 1946, it says starting 1946 and runs to 1964 D labeled spaces. Lucky guess??? LOL. I don't know really how they got that to work out so perfectly unless it was made later than the copyright and they kept the copyright the same. from 1946-1955 it was PDS, for 1956 onward it was just PD. So I'd think regardless of the copyright, it has to at least be after 1956, and likely made after the composition change to clad where the folder stops with labeled spaces. Seems weird maybe, but I think about these things. I mean it says clad starting 1965 across the top of the blank 3rd page, so I'd think it was made way later than the copyright on it, like maybe right on 1965. There's all kinds of strangeness, like so many different copyrights for the same thing. I was trying to use it as a dating method, but it doesn't really work out, like in the roosevelt dime case. What I can say is the earlier albums of continuing series coins, have many more uninked spaces. I'd "buy the book" but it's expensive.. LOL https://www.amazon.com/Collecting-Complete-History-Publishing-1940-1978/dp/0989455327 David Lange has done the heavy lifting of trying to make heads or tails of it. Personally I like how the folders were cheap, and it's like one of those things most of us started with in collecting, I have a certain love for them actually. Not that "$78.99 buy the book so I know everything there is to know about them" kind of love, I'd rather just find and buy more old folders instead with the money I think. hahaha.
I've seen Roosevelt albums with labeled spots for "1965" and "1965-D". I may still have one somewhere. I don't remember whether it called out the shift to clad coinage, but I'm betting it didn't. There was another thread a few years back where I asked about other albums with holes for dates that were never struck, but I can't find it at the moment.
Ha, I still have an unused 9004 copyright 1949 I bought as a kid for 39 cents. I partially filled some other ones but I guess I gave up.
