I wish I could help, but the only Lima I know of is in Peru, and there is nothing remotely similar listed in the 18th Century Krause for Peru, which was under Spanish rule for the entire Century.

There was never a King George II in Spain, so as very much a non-expert in European and European Colonial issues I'm at a complete loss where to look for the coin.

LATER: Seek, and perhaps ye shall find - maybe!

There is a 15g 33.5mm sterling silver 1/2 crown of English King George II (KM#584.2) that resembles your coin, but it lacks the "LIMA" legened, and was last minted in 1751 according to the Krause 18th Century 3rd Ed. (2002).

There is also a 30g 39mm sterling silver crown (KM#585.3), which does have the "LIMA" on it, but according to Krause that coin was minted from Spanish silver seized at Lima, Peru, in 1746 only.

hi no i know the coin is a british coin, and the lima means it was made from spanish silver, same as the gold ones also have lima, cos made from spanish gold, was just wondering if any1 knoew what value it could be as ive looked about n got conflicting reports, some £440 and £270 and £40 and another i saw £100, so confused on the value.

What did you base your description of "half crown" on?

What are the size and weight of your coin?

This coin is an english coin minted from silver siezed from peru.

you should find it in krause under great britain. The minted from for 2 years, 1745 and 1746

I have an example from both years, unfortunately the condition of mine are not as good as yours:

well, for both pieces I have, I can tell you I paid less than 125 USD combined.

again, yours is a superior grade, although I see a few rim dings. I would say that £40 is too low - but £440 is way too high.

I would guess your piece would value somewhere in the range of $200.00, but that's a guess.

Working of course :D And he was likely asleep.

Rick is correct on why the Lima - as for value, I'd say more like $150.

I have got a British 1745 'Lima' 6d. in my collection. It is not as scarce as the 1723 'SSC' 1/- with the French Coat-of-Arms at the date, however.I have got one of the latter coins, which was discovered & recorded over 20 years ago.

    Aidan.
