Poking through a bin of older world copper and I found this piece - been trying to figure out what it is (if I had to guess, I'd say it was some sort of temple token from India?) and after poring through the Krause manuals for a while, I figured I'd use my lifeline and ask for help.

    What is this?

Reverse looks like Hindi, Sanskrit, one of those type of languages. I'm guessing Nepal.

    AND THE CROWD GOES WILD!!!!!!!

Seriously, great work. Due to condition of this piece I'm leaning toward a 1940 restrike...what are your thoughts?

I did check Nepal, but from my recollection their design styles are fairly consistent (don't recall too many figures, mostly geometric shapes.) Also checked into Tibet, same thing as Nepal but more so.

Yeah I did a little searching and I'm also leaning restrike.

FWIW, I image searched "hindi monkey coin" lol.

Haha I googled "copper monkey coin" and came up with a bunch of "not the right coins, most of which don't even have monkeys on them."

Funny, now that I know what it is, I quickly found it in Krause. Sigh...too many pages of images of coins. But all it took was ONE other person who helped.

Thank you sir, from one ex-Navy guy to another.

On a fun side note, I'm having a hell of a fun time going through my bin of older world non-silver. Yesterday's fun find was a Cyprus 1891 1/2 Piastre, today's was a 1762 BB Sou Marque from the French Colonies (Haiti.) All this from my bin that is supposed to only be 1800's (I have a separate one from the 1700's that now I'm itching to pull out.)

That does sound like fun. I miss the days of going to a coin show and digging through the world coin bin and finding cool little things like that. My LCS world coin bin was basically 70's Bahamas proof coins that were broken out of sets. AND they charged 8/$10! I haven't been in over a year but I doubt their stock has changed much.

Yeah, I was literally just saying to my wife today how much I miss random flea markets and honey-hole coin shops and coin shows where people don't care at all about stupid foreign coins.

I'm hoping to go to a local show next month. Trying to get Paddy to join me since he will be fully vaccinated then as well :)
