Many of you know from past posts that I collected as a boy, but completely got out of it until my dad passed in March and I inherited his collection. Since that time, I have been able to connect with him by finishing his Dansco albums. To date I've completed the Kennedy Halves, Sacagawea dollars, Roosevelt Dimes, Jefferson Nickels, and Washington State Quarters. He collected pretty much through circulation, so the coins are not in the best grades, but to me they are priceless. Well, in the last couple of weeks, I've purchased a 1953S Franklin which completed that album. This is one album (you can plainly see in the pics) that in the future I will upgrade as I really love this series. But for now, I'm extremely pleased to fill the last hole. I also bought a 1932D Washington Quarter. I got it for $60 on ebay. It is not in the best shape at all, but it actually is better than the 1932S that he had in the album, so it fits quite nicely. My budget is very low right now, but since it fits, I'm thrilled to be able to complete this one. I now have every washington quarter through 2008 (missing some Ps for this year). Here are the pics. It is amazing how connected I feel with my Dad when I complete these albums. Coins are more than just money.... Two more albums complete......This is for you Dad! Thanks for listening!
32-Ds are going for that much??? I bought one from a CM member who was selling stuff right around 96 or so. He had it listed for $3. The market was about $30 at the time. Well, me being interested in key dates, I saw it right away and I sent him a message telling him that I wanted the coin but that I wanted to know if he was sure that the price was correct. He assured me that it was and I purchased the coin and never looked back. I often wonder if he had made a mistake or if he had merely been a philanthropist doing good for others.
Congradulations. I have read that most great coin collections are generational in thier building. Now you have to decide which is the most important, to expand the collection, improve the collection you already have, or some of both. I hope my sons are faced with the same decision someday as you are, not to sell for the money. As someone said earlier I also am sure your Father is very proud. If I remember correctly I believe you have children also to someday continue on.
Nice job and great pictures. Thanks! Sorry about losing your dad. I received a large collection of albums that needed one or two holes plugged from my late father-in-law. I think that he fell on hard times and basically sold the keys in the collection off to raise some cash. Every time I complete one of these albums I get to move them from one side of the shelf to the other. It’s a feeling of accomplishment. I still have two more Washington albums to fill with the 1932, D and S coins but I will not settle for low-grade coins since the other coins in the album are higher grades. It’s expensive but that is what birthdays and Christmas were invented for. I have the added problem of having to collect three albums of every type of coin so my three kids don’t have to fight over them when I die. Keep pluggin' those holes.
Congrats! I'm currently working on 4 sets...Kennedy Halves (only a handfull left!), Jeffersons (same thing), Ikes (only 4 more), and Lincolns (about 40% done)...all in BU/proof. I was thinking about starting a Franklin set after I finish the first three (I'm sure the Lincolns will take a while) and I think I will after looking at your post. Good story. Thanks for sharing!
Congrats on finishing the Washington quarter collection. I still need the 32D and the 32S and the 2009 quarter if you count them. I've bid on a few 32D and 32S's over the past year but they always go for more than I want to spend. I think you did good at $50for that quality 32D.
Thanks Phil. Yes, I've bid on more than a dozen 32D's in the last 5 months and all kept going higher than I wanted as well. I was pleased with the one I got and it fits nicely.
