I know the pics suck, but it's the best I could do. I don't know how to take the pics without the flash showing up on the coin.

    Ok, I'll guess. I'm thinking MS-63.

could dmpl also be added to this grade?

a real nice coin, I would say that is about a ms-64, how is the cartwheel on it? I think some of the marks I am seeing might be on the holder, so I might be low. It is hard to tell by the pics but it might even be dmpl.

I can't tell if this coin is PL or DMPL from the pictures, but it looks like a very nice coin. Very few bag marks. I could see this coin easily being MS65.

It looks like a Proof to me and one that has quite a few hairlines. I'll guess Proof 62-63.

I was going to say 64 PL but after Mark's post?

I was kind of wondering the same thing. I rims seem very sharp and defined as well as the rest of the coin. More than a typical 1883. I haven't seen enough proofs in person to really see them though. But, my first gut instinct about this coin was a proof.

Looks like a MS 64-65 is that a stain on what on the bottom at the 6 or 7 o'clock posititon.

I was going to guess ms63, but better graders have already weighed in.

the first photo almost makes me think it has been cleaned from all the hairlines, but i'm starting to think it may be the holder..

I agree - that first photo in the holder made me want to say "genuine". Looks polished and it could very well be the hold. I will pass in this case. You really should not need a flash when taking pictures - just good lighting. The best lighting is natural sunlight. :)

I agree with the proof opinion. The hairlines on the obverse turn me off... I would also say low end... PF62??

Thanks for all of the comments. Some of you got close. Anyone think there is a chance to upgrade?

LostDutchman didn't get "close" - he nailed it;) And my PR62-63 guess was VERY close.

Regarding a chance for an upgrade - there is no way to make such a determination about a Proof coin based on images. Far more times than not, the grade is heavily affected by the degree of hairlines, which can't fully be seen in images.
