I got these two coins today from Saguntum . They are both quadrants with different reverses. The Siege of Saguntum took place 219 BC with the Carthaginians and the Saguntines at the town of Saguntum, near the modern town of Sagunto in Spain. The battle is remembered because it triggered one of the most important wars of antiquity, the Second Punic War. Saguntum/ Arse. Sagunto 170-20 B.C. (Valencia Spain) AE Quadrant, 2.85 grams Burgos 2054 Obv: Scallop shell. Rev: Dolphin, crescent above, three dots and Iberian letter A below. Saguntum/ Arse. Sagunto 170-20 B.C. (Valencia Spain) AE Quadrant, 3.43 grams Burgos 2052 Obv: Scallop shell. Rev: Dolphin crescent above Iberian letter A above, three dots Iberian letter A, I below. Here are the other two I already had in my collection. Saguntum/ Arse. Sagunto (Valencia Spain) 170-20 B.C. AE Sextans, 1.12 grams Scallop shell. Dolphin, crescent above, star and Iberian letter A below. Burgos 2064. Saguntum/ Arse. Sagunto 170-20 B.C. (Valencia Spain) AE Quadrant, 3.76 grams Burgos 2054 Obv: Scallop shell. Rev: Dolphin, crescent above, three dots and Iberian letter A below. And the one that got lost in the mail about a year ago.
The history on the siege of Saguntum is a very interesting subject to study up on. I highly suggest reading about it, it really puts a good story behind the coins and just makes it more exciting for me to have in my collection.
