Shown below are two uncirculated 1987-P Jefferson Nickels. Please vote in the attached poll indicating which coin your prefer and if you feel like opining on the grade of each nickel, do so in your reply to the thread. Coin #1: Coin #2: As always, comments welcome, and please remember to vote!
I like coin #2 better. The Obv of #1 is a tad better but the reverse and nice FS on coin 2 just looks much better. I think coin 1 is stuck at 65 while the reverse on coin 2 helps it to make 66FS.
I went with the second coin....I think it might be one point lower but it looks more prooflike to me (which I prefer in this case) Coin 1: 67 6FS Coin 2: 66 6FS
It’s really a dead heat to my eyes. No.1 has a better obverse. No.2 has a better reverse. Both grade at least at 66 with FS.
For those of you who think these coins should share the same grade, I agree with you. For those who think coin #1 is the nicer of the two, I also agree with you, and that is why Coin #1 which is freshly back from an NGC submission has replaced Coin #2 in my NGC Registry set. Coin #1: 1987-P NGC MS65 6FS Coin #2: 1987-P NGC MS66 6FS And for anyone who was following my Steppin up my game thread, you can see why I was a little grumpy the other day.
I did not get a chance to respond before the reveal, but I agree that BOTH coins should be higher grade. I would have gone 67 6FS on coin 1, and 66+ FS on coin 2. Both are the classic definition of 6 full steps—undisturbed and pristine. Luster is great on both. I don’t see where they got coin #1 as a 65–grader must have been smoking Banana peels. In terms of eye appeal, I prefer coin 2 slightly, but would happily own either one.
Whomever that grader was absolutely destroyed my last submission. He either graded low, or didn't give full steps, or both. That said, my last PCGS submission was even worse.
TPG grading is very shaky, as of recent. I am looking to buy coins in older holders, and being very judicious with new submissions.
I got here after the reveal, but I would've voted for #2. Some noise on the obverse, but the reverse is spectacular.
So I had to dig out my 87 mint set because of this thread The d has several large hits on the obverse but the p is quite nice. I am too chicken to cut out of the cellophane but just rough planchet on the bust and very nice reverse and 6 FS. I know its hard to see through the plastic.
