Easter greetings to my CTAF friends I was so inspired by @svessien ’s Biblical Coins on Friday and @troutrus Happy Easter yesterday that I decided to check out VCOINS and see if my favorite dealers were offering any Judaean coins for my collection that have been previously unavailable. I was fortunate to find one that was in circulation during the earthly lifetime of Christ.
Brilliant coin (and coup), Deacon Ray. Congratulations! ...What is known about how long prutahs and leptons circulated? Particularly in reference to Maccabean ones, and only especially relative to, Thank you, 'widow's mites.' What brings this up is mainly how much more common they are, especially relative to your amazing find, which I don't remember ever having seen one of. It's easy to suppose that the interval could have been a century or more. ...Speaking of which, one thing that makes yours so great is how even the wear is, with the corresponding clarity of the legend and devices. With the patina, your example is a resonant endorsement of that sort of esthetic. (...Of which I'm a longtime adherent.)
Well done, @Gavin Richardson. ...If he was Marcus Avunculus, he could be your uncle. Whether or not the stereotypical one.
Well, for what it's worth @Herodotus, you made me happy. ...And if he was Marcus Ambilicus, he could be the latest addition to the family. (Dang, I'm envying him those crawfish....)
I sure miss those days but maybe they’ll return soon. Ambibulus is the more common spelling on the various coin sites.
