My dealer found these for me last week. The first three editions (four books) by Hans Zoell on Canadian varieties and errors. The first edition, Canadian Coin Variety Catalog was printed in 1961; The second editon, 1962-1963 Canadian Coin Variety Catalog was printed in 1962; The third edition, Major Coin Vaieties (part one and part two) was printed in 1965. Three of them are complete and intact. The second edition doesn't have a cover but all the pages are there. All the books were holed and put into a binder. Unfortunately, the later updates weren't included. These are amazing, very rare reference materials for collectors of Canadian coins. For those who aren't familiar with Hans Zoell, here's a link to a PDF file of his bio. http://www.cevna.com/articles/HansZoellBio.pdf
That's a very nice find. Too bad that you won't be able to search in change for most of those dates. I hardly see any coinage with Elizabeth II first bust, obviously silver, but even pennies are scares. None the less it's a great reference book. Finding information on different varieties and errors pertaining to Canadian coinage is quite hard. Gratz
Thanks for the response. The books include all coins from Victoria up to Elizabeth II. I'll be receiving 10,000 George V and George VI cents in a couple of weeks. It'll be interesting to see what varities I can find in those. A good winter project.
Only small cents. Key and semi-key dates will be missing. The majority of the cents are from collections purchased over the last twenty five years. This is the first pile of Canadians that I've bought from my dealer. Over the last year I bought about 12,000 wheat cents from him that I searched for errors. I found a few that paid for the works. My dealer doesn't bother with errors or varieties from cents, so there's a good opportunity for me to find a few goodies.
saw the Zoell book today as a 3 ring copy that was a show handout in the 80's. very cool. no pictures, just text.
Nice! Certainly hard to find. I am still hunting down the 3rd edition, I managed to grab the first ans second editions at a book store a year or so back. How much did you pay for the 3 of them?
There's four books in total. They were $50 (Canadian) for the set. I've seen the odd one on ebay for anywhere from $20-$75 each. Can't remember if that was a BIN price or final auction price. It was quite awhile ago.
I would say you got an amazing deal! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140360286825&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT http://cgi.ebay.com/Major-Coin-Vari...emQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_2?hash=item4a9bb1cba1 There are actually a bunch of these little booklets. See here.
Thanks for links! This day just keeps getting better and better. Earlier today, I was metal detecting and found an 18 gram, 18k gold chain. At today's gold price it's valued at about $515 Canadian. Now these books! I have to get myself a couple of lottery tickets!
