Before I put this thread to rest, I recommend this excellent video to better understand the events that led to the Battle of Abritus in 251 AD. At the battle of Abritus (in modern-day Bulgaria) both Decius and his co-ruling son Herennius Etruscus met their death by the forces of the Gothic king Cniva:

What I find interesting is that some of the coins were still around something like a hundred years after their minting. Mid to late Second Century silver coinage had a higher percentage of silver than mid Third Century coinage so I wonder if those older coins passed at face value or at a premium over the most recent coinage.
