I just copied and pasted the following which I posted on someone else's thread.. Environmental Damage caused by exposure to the elements. Sand, soil, dirt, chemicals and water will tone the Cupro-Nickel clad. Nickels are also made of Cupro-Nickel and suffer the same Environmental toning damage. Here are many examples from my metal detected finds..
Also these are clad - not plated. Clad coins are a mechanically bonded sandwich of 75-25 Copper-Nickel outer layers over a100% copper core.
