I need some help here i have in my possession a coin that appears to be gold and has on the one side a building which i would guess to be the mint and the words "United States Mint- Philadelphia" under this is is written August 14th 1969 and under that is written Department of the Treasury. on the other side is the eagle with the map of USA across it. I am sorry to be vague but i am from the UK and not sure of the insignias
Howdy David - Welcome to the Forum !! What you have is not gold - it's a copper alloy. It's a mint token that was included in the packaging with the annual mint sets. It has no value.
Its not a mint set that has it...here is a link...the mint does a lot of them..I picked up a almost complete set of the Presidents at a flea-market for a under $35--they had gotten hot and the copper had toned...they are neat but not my best pick!! Duh !! I need to read more carefully - I saw that Philadelphia Mint and US Treasury and presto - mint token. I completely missed the August 14, 1969 line. Thanks for correcting my mistake Speedy
hey GDJMSP-- To make it funnier...I didn't see where you said mintset....I saw your post the other day but didn't re-read it today and was just typing what I thought was right Speedy
Ahh...here's the sub-directory link to the exact coin described, thanks Speedy & doug! By the way,has anyone else ever noticed that the Mints "click here to view larger image" links NEVER work? try it! http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&productId=10982
As I was vainly searching for the above mentioned token in my mint sets,I came across this Denver Mint souvenir set that I had forgotten about.Does anyone know if they were sold only at that mint, maybe in the gift shop? I can't find it by Googling. It is an authorized government product and has U.S. Mint stamped into the plya-film.As you can see,it wasn't too expensive.
To the best of my knowledge, yes, they were only sold at the mints. They were issued in quite a few years - but not all of them. In '82 & '83 they didn't issue mint sets at all and those souvenir sets were as close as you could get. But based on that price sticker - I'd say that one was sold in the secondary market. Cladking knows most of the issue years off by heart, he'll be able to tell you much more when he sees this
Thanks Doug! I finally found a listing on coinfacts. They value my 1981 set at $11.00 but the 82-83's are only $4.00 for each year and mint. Now if I can only find them at those prices.
I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you The '82 sets frequently sell for $30 - $40 and I've seen the '83 sets sell for over $100. But with patience you can get one for $50 or so.
