Hi all, looking for a $40-50 birthday gift for someone. Over the years I have gotten them a variety of civil war tokens, birth year set, etc. The last few years they have been collecting more in slabs than raw.

Was debating one of those nice aluminum slab boxes...holds 20 labs and he only has 10ish right now. And a rechargeable desiccant pack for his safe.

Does this seem like a solid gift given his change in collecting or should I go the coin route?

I always love getting coins, but gear can be fun too lol.

    Thanks for the input!

I like the aluminum slab box (20) idea. Add a slabbed coin of his collecting type into the box.

I light the Lighthouse slab albums, Classy and the 4 page album is exactly in your price range.

What makes a gift good is that it's something that the person wants but wouldn't necessarily buy it for themself. Personally I don't think I would go the coin route because unless its a rarity most people know what they want and get it. Or enjoy the quest for it as much or more so than the actual possession. How about a gadget like a USB microscope?

I like the suggestion of the Lighthouse slab album. Nice way to easily look at and admire them as well as to store.

Well I wish I was lucky enough to be on your gift list! I'd go with a used PCGS box (a decent one, take the tape / stickers off, if you don't have extras I buy them for about $4 each in lots of 10 or more, the more you buy, the cheaper from the big dealers) with something like a Native American / Space Dollar in a PCGS Slab (less than $20) and a lower grade MS Morgan or Peace Dollar, probably raw at your price point, but maybe if you get lucky with a low ball bid in a big four slab - something relatively common (or even details) but nice like one of these... Hi all,

Thank so much for all the awesome suggestions! This is such a great forum.

I liked the slab box idea becuase I know he just has them stacked in his safe. He's not the type to buy specific storage. The album is also a solid idea but I think it may take too much room in the safe....its pretty small.

He does mixed modern and ancients so im sure I could find something small to throw in. Humidity control is nice. And no hes never bought one! But coins are shiny hahah

You mentioned he has a B-Y set, but thinking individual coin(s), what is his birth year...?

A nice Franklin Half, with the clashed Die, more commonly known as The Bugs Bunny variety. I gave my brother one last year and he loves it.

Well, if his B-Y set includes a Franklin, that's that...but if it doesn't, it was the last year of the Franklin because of JFK, et al, and a nice graded example either in Proof...maybe a cam/Dcam...or in MS64 or 65 can be found/had for about that price. Just a suggestion...all I can think of for 1963 coins.

I got him a mint sealed set, not graded. A nice high endish one may be a solid idea
