Another from my batch of provincials. This Gordian III from Odessos has a really nice representation of the Hercules of the "Boarium" type. Hercules shows up all the time on reverses, but only a few times are the sculptural type readily identifiable in extant statues. This one features Hercules leaning on his club, held out at an angle, with the Nemean lion skin draped over his left arm. Gordian III AE18x16 3.3g AVTMANTΩNI ΓOΡΔIANOCAYΓ. Bare head right (plus some lip injections) OΔHC CEITΩN. Boarium Hercules standing, leaning on club with Nemean lionskin draped on left arm. The Boarium type is in an identical pose.
Wow. That is a....face...The sculptor did great with the body and then got to the face and was clearly not up to the task
Your coin is the hot lips variety. That is all I have to say on that yikes on the sculpture.. funny but certainly not so appealing as others of Gordian III
