Bought this as a details coin. I’m thinking old dip that is starting to tone again. Got it for xf price. Thoughts? Has it been cleaned? Anyway a bucket list coin for me
Even though its probably cleaned its a tough date coin and one of the only two Indians with an S. Speaking of that can you get a closer picture of the mm.
I agree it looks cleaned. The MM does not look like one I saw on coinfacts, but I have not studied the issue that closely.
I agree that the mm looks off compared to the rest of the coin. That being said, this is not my area of expertise.
How does everyone know that it's been cleaned ? Can you all explain please . Thank You .I also agree that it's at least AU .
Start with the lettering, both on the obverse and reverse. Look closely at all the nooks, crannies and low spots surrounding the letters. There's crud in the devices where the high spots and fields look clean. On the obverse you can see micro abrasions between the date and the indian's neck and above the headdress.
In addition to what @masterswimmer said, the color is a good indicator of it having been cleaned. My friends and I used to clean coins (pre-teenagers) and that's the color they all looked like after the cleaning. Here's a listing of the RPM-001 if you want to check for it: https://www.indianvarieties.com/cents/indian-head-cents/1908-indian-head-penny/1908-s-rpm-001/
