You should try being a forum owner/admin. If you were you'd be the one getting the notifications and letters from lawyers over copyright violations like Peter and I have. Of course the only thing we get is the request to take it down. But more than few members who thought the same way you do - well, they got sued. And then they had to pay their own lawyers.

Ya see, CT isn't the one who gets sued, the member who breaks copyright law is the one who gets sued. So, if ya don't wanna believe it's a violation, have at it. And then you might be the one getting served with lawsuits.

I'm very confused why anyone would think .gov wouldn't lay claim to anything they want from coast to coast and border to border. Hell, we don't even own our homes. No mortgage doesn't mean you own squat. Try not paying the 'rent' on your home, ie: school taxes and property taxes every year. See how long you live in 'your home' after that.

You want to put in a pool? Get permission, aka a permit.
How about build an extension? Get permission.
A fence to separate you from that wiley neighbor? Yup, get permission.
I think you get the idea.

If we don't own our own residences, the property we paid for, the place we call home, how can we expect that a civil war hoard of gold, or anything else for that matter, could be kept without the feds claiming it's theirs?

I don't doubt you guys have a difficult job, including the site owners, GD. You guys are responsible for hundreds of us, it's a thankless job.

So I'll just say THANK YOU. :D

Can I ask what were the copyright violations ? Were they cut-and-pasts of coin articles from magazines where they wanted someone to hit a link and/or subscribe ?

I would think that it isn't worth their while to sue people for INADVERTENT "violations" of copyrights.

    If you give PROPER ATTRIBUTION and/or include a link....is that a violation ? I honestly don't know.

As I asked above, can you give us a specific or general example of what has caused problems at CT in the past ?

There's no problem at with posting links to anything you want to post links to. Links do not violate copyright in any way. Which is precisely why you can use the Image icon to post pictures that are protected by copyright - because the only thing the Image icon does is link to that picture posted elsewhere by its owner.

But citing your source, giving proper attribution - that does nothing at all for you. The law is quite clear, you MUST have written permission from the owner to use copyrighted material ! And that is the one and only thing that gives you permission.

Of course the Fair Use clause applies but the Fair Use clause only allows you to use very limited portions of copyrighted material, a few sentences or maybe 1 short paragraph of text - but that's it. And Fair Use does not apply to pictures at all. Each and every individual picture has its own specific copyright.

Sometimes it's been copying and pasting an article, other times it's been pictures.

What one has to remember is this, violating copyright is in effect stealing, it's theft of something owned by others. And if that other makes his/her living from the written word or the pictures they take - and you take them - you are taking money out of their pocket. You are stealing from them. If somebody stole money from you, would it ever be OK with you ? I think not.
