When I bought this denarius I thought that it might be from Alexandria mint, because of Julia's round eye. But surprisingly I cannot find a remotely similar denarius in any of Eastern mints. Possibly an imitation? It is no fouree, but silver is rather debased - not unusual for official coins at the time. What do you think? DomnaFortunaAlexandria.jpg

I suspect it to be unofficial. The Fortuna seated type does occur in the eastern mints but from the earlier IVLIA DOMNA AVG types. The style on this example, whilst quite good doesn't seem to match what I would expect.

Fortuna types certainly exist for Domna from the east. I have a few.

DOMNA AVG - FORT AVG - Fortuna seated left, holding rudder and cornucopia

DOMNA AVG - FORT-VN REDVC, Fortuna seated left, holding rudder and cornucopia

Thank you Maridunum! I had looked at online resources and could not find one, but indeed I hoped that if anywhere, some Domna Fortunas could sit in your or Doug Smit's collections. Maybe your second example is overall closest stylistically to my denarius, but on second look I agree, it is more likely an imitation. For example, the last two letters on the obverse look poorly executed even for the relaxed Eastern standards.

Your obverse is also IVLIA AVGVSTA...

Yes but some early Alexandrian denarii have such obverse, for example:[IMG]

I think those are later than the DOMNA type. Yours certainly isn't Alexandrian.

Here is the earlier (scarcer) version of the same type.
