Nothing amazing this month. My favorite is probably this cool Clavdivs with an interesting portrait style and nice Fides reverse. Flan cracks are savage but I think it adds character.
My only march coin. Decentius (351 - 353 A.D.) Æ Centenionalis O: D N DECENTIVS NOB CAES, cuirassed bust right. R: VICTORIAE DD NN AVG ET CAE, two Victories standing facing one another, holding between them a wreath inscribed VOT / V / MVLT / X SV/RSLG 4.69g 22mm Lugdunum (Lyons) Mint RIC VIII 137; Bastien 177; LRBC 228
Very cool Gothicus! Those cracks certainly give the coin a higher chance of breaking... but like you said add a cool visual appeal. My problem is the opposite for a recent March win. Mine is plenty thick but unlike yours has plenty of wear and a different type of crack. A test cut! Pampylia - Aspendos - Triskele AR Stater 465-430 BC Obv: naked warrior walking right holding sword and shield. Rev: triskele in incuse square. 10.57 grams. Fair; banker cut to reverse. Provenance Property a London gentleman; acquired Heritage auctions. Purchased from Timeline Auctions Feb 2021. Literature Cf. SNG France 3/12; Aulock 4483.
This is my favorite from March because Faustina's portrait is in very fine style. Moreover, it's quite scarce. After a comprehensive internet search, I have been able to identify only three other known examples with a stephaned bust: The British Museum specimen, the Tameryazev and Makarenko plate coin, and LAC auction 42, lot 408. Faustina II, AD 147-175. Roman AR denarius, 3.01 g, 19.6 mm, 1 h. Rome, AD 161-164. Obv: FAVSTINA AVGVSTA, draped bust of Faustina II, right, wearing stephane. Rev: IVNO, Juno standing left, holding patera and scepter; peacock at feet. Refs: RIC 688 var. (stephane); BMCRE 109; RSC 120b; RCV 5255 var. (stephane); CRE 189.
Oooh I like that coin, looks like it’s from Milan. We had a thread on Milan issued Claudius II coins while back. A fun group to collect! https://www.cointalk.com/threads/claudius-ii-coins-of-milan-mediolanum.366340/
January and February were quite rich for me, in March I decided to slow down the pace. However I bought 7 worn coins offline and they're OK. My favorite remains this one, even if the shape is poor. Volusian AE26 of Dacia. IMP CC VIB VOLUSIANVS AVG, laureate, draped & cuirassed bust right / PROVINCIA DACIA, Dacia, standing left with branch & sceptre, between eagle & lion, AN V in ex. SGI 4360.
My March coin. I may not have another for a few months. Pescennius Niger, R 193-194 AD, Silver Denarius struck at Antioch 193 AD. Obverse: Laureate Head of Pescennius Niger facing right, legend around, “IMP CAES C PESE NIGER IVSTI AV”. Reverse: Jupiter seated facing left on backless throne, holding sceptre in left hand and Victoria, who holds spear and wreath, in his right, legend around, “IOVI PRAE ORBIS”. As Sear-6111 (different legend); RSC-43b var.
