Howdy, Don't know how this is possible unless it was maybe put in a pendent that fell into a garbage disposal. I apologize if clamshell is not the proper term but couldn't think of anything to call it. The separation starts gradually from both sides then expands and covers 3/4 of the circumference. Any help is greatly appreciated.
It was encapsulated at some time most likely...a lucky penny in one of those novelty thingies is my guess But could be a version of what some call a "dryer coin" where it was stuck in machinery squeezed and rotating, like the back of a dryer drum.

When you see the rim and edge chewed up like that, visualize it was held in something, like @Kurisu just showed. The edge, often times as here will be beveled, too. Think someone later on needed the money real real bad and freed the thing.
