Hi out there. I need some help. I was going to purchase some 1935-1950+ silver certificate $1 bills with blue and some red seals. However, they did not have "In God We Trust" on the back. Can anyone tell me the year the quote actually started printing on paper money? And, are they worth purchasing?

The 1935G series $1.00 Silver Certificates are the first to have IGWT. It was added after production was started so some 1935G do not have the motto.

Hey--thanks for responding (lets me know someones listening/reading-lol). Okay. So do you think the ones that are dated after 1935-1950+ and do not have IGWT motto are counterfeit bills? I have some $2 also. I'm just starting my collection and want to get things right.

Not all notes have IGWT on them...depends on the Series and the type as well as the denomination..

Get a book on Small Size US Paper Money..it will be worth it for you.

RickieB is right, a currency book would be most benificial too you as you start out. Might help you aviod some pitfalls as your collection progresses! Never feel you cant ask question though! Most currency books would be able to tell you which series started carrying th inscription in which years :)

    Series 1935A, 1935B, 1935C, 1935D, 1935E, 1935F and some 1935G do not have IGWT.

Some 1935G and all 1935H have IGWT.

All 1957 Series $1.00 Silver Certificates will have IGWT.

For more information on IGWT see the Treasury website
    http://www.ustreas.gov/education/fact-sheets/currency/in-god-we-trust.shtml

I also recommend that you buy the book on small size US currency.

In additional to the information others provided, small-size $1 Silver Certificates have blue seals. United States Notes have red seals, but the only small-size $1 United States Note was Series 1928.

Here is some additional information on the "National Motto" of "In God We Trust": http://www.panix.com/~clay/currency/motto.html

Also, if you start looking at things that aren't $1's, keep in mind that the series dates have absolutely nothing to do with the printing dates. The first series printed with the motto was Series 1957, which (logically) went into production in 1957. The reason some of the later 1935x notes have the motto is that they were (not at all logically) printed in the '60s.

In particular, nothing dated 1950 or 1953 will have the motto, which probably isn't what you'd've guessed based on the prior posts. And it might not be what you'd guess from the printing dates, either: the last notes produced without the motto were some 1950E $10's printed in 1968, so it actually took the BEP eleven years to phase in the with-motto printings....

The chronology of series here and the table of delivery dates here might help to make some sense of all of this. Slightly.
