I too would’ve guessed 55-58. I mean, look at the feather detail on that eagle. But... Spoiler: Click here when you’re ready to see the slab.
Mintmark? I gather the mintmark was repunched into nonexistence, then? I suppose you meant RPD rather than RPM. Thanks for the link. I’ll check it out.
I purposely didn’t guess the grade. I am just so darned partial to seated coins. I would be guilty of over grading every time.
53 is quite low even with the scratches but didn't know it was in a 20 year old anacs slab.It would probably grade details today though.
They went far to low. I think it is a clear 58, despite the scratches. They are wear, not cleaning, as I see it, and relatively minor. It is a nice looking coin.
I'm not particularly fond of the cleaning scratches, but as far as actual "wear" on the coin is concerned, and that plus cleaning scratches are a major criteria for me personally, I'd call this piece an AU-55.
I guessed 58. I’m not seeing the wear to knock it down to a 53, and the eye appeal is very high in my opinion. None of the problems people mentioned would bother me.
I think they were a bit harsh on the grade. I voted AU58, ignoring the scratches, as they obviously did, and would love to have it in my collection. Nice coin Rob.
To me it deserves a straight AU-58, but afraid it may be AU-Details from the graders...the rub areas on both sides. Hope not. The graders are so fickle/inconsistent with this sort of stuff, and they really shouldn't be. This is a decent coin and let's hope that, unlike so many other decent/similar coins relegated to the "details" heap for similar insignificant "marks," this one survived with a straight/legitimate grade.
I don’t think it was harshly cleaned. I believe it’s a decent mid-AU coin and was correctly graded as such. It’s certainly not MS/AU58 (too much wear on Liberty’s leg and breast) but maybe it was downgraded from AU55 to 53 because of the hairlines.
Yesterday's, (figuratively defining that as approximately 20 years ago), AU-53 is today's AU-55, or maybe even better, if you get the right grader. Grade inflation has bumped everything up at least one grade or better.
