My wife is nagging the crap out of me as I have about $600 in coins bagged up (bags of 71's, 72's, 73's etc) and laying around in boxes in my office. She want's me to change it into bills so she can go spend it. So anyway, how long do you all save the change before changing it back into 'regular' spending money? Thanks, Chas.
If I had bags dating back that far, I would first check for uncirculated, error, and better date coins-- two or three times, to make sure I hadn't missed anything. And who knows? There could be some goodie like a 1972 Doubled Die penny hiding in your hoard.
Well, shortly after Darryl (USS656) Made a thread .. or a comment about that earlier, I decided to bring mine in. I had 161$ in Pennies. I tried to take a sneaky picture with my camera while in the bank. There was just over 3 boxes in the box closest to the camera.
Woah, lot of cents. Did you roll them yourself, or let them do it? I'm planning on going to one of the local casinos where they have free change exchange. Then I'm going to go to another reservation to get new coins to make sure I don't get the same ones back, LoL. I'd love to go to a bank just up the road, but am a little hesitant cause I figure their machine would catch older coins or coins that don't weigh what they're supposed to. Anyway, just curious if you spent the time to re-roll the coins yourself (seems like it would take forever).
I have box of halves, 2 boxes of dimes, and 4 boxes worth of pennies in bags. I think its time to cash them in
Yep, I'm going through my 20's through 92's all over again. I figure I'll give split the piggy bank in half and get myself some more cents, dimes, and halves (this time).
Yes, I re-roll my own. After cracking a roll. I pour it out, check it out, and re-roll it. I got sick of having a big mound of unrolled coins on one side, and a bunch of empty rolls on the other. I just keep it organized and re-roll right away.
I had probably $800 in coins that I had accumulated and deposited in my checking account. I thought I had checked them thoroughly, but after I deposited them I learned about such things as a 1983 Doubled Die and 1984 Doubled Ear penny, and a 1992 Close AM cent, as well as a Minnesota "extra tree" quarter. While I was on the lookout for the '72 and '95 Doubled Die cents, I had no idea about these other varieties. Now I'm kicking myself for perhaps overlooking one of these other varieties.
Bum machines Just a polite warning to those who use the change counting machines at the bank. There are some machines that count your coins incorrectly. I had a feeling that one machine at the Savings Institute in Plainfield, CT was miscounting my coins every time. So I hand counted exactly 200 half dollars and ran them in the self service machine. It only counted 198 and spit out a slip for $99. I told the teller who said that was impossible. "this machine is calibrated weekly". I told her next time I wanted her to run the coins through. So I went back with another 200 halfs. She hand counted them first upon my request to do so. She got 200 in her count. Then she turned on the machine and ran them through and it counted 197. I said "see that"? and she nodded her head. I gave her a second coffee can with exactly 100 half dollars in it. She counted about 30 coins and turned the machine on and pushed the coins into the machine as she counted them [supposedly she counted them]. The machine counted 98 coins and gyped me out of a dollar. She refused to agree I got cheated the second time. She did not count out all the coins before running them into the machine. She made good on the first batch for the $1.50 she saw the machine cheat me out of. But she refused to acknowledge the second batch was 100 coins and didn't make up the $1.00 she saw the machine cheat me for. So I closed my accounts there and never went back. My new bank has a different machine which is a Cummins. That machine has always counted correctly and never cheated me once.
Yup, that's why I've been hording mine for so long. First I sorted them into the same decade. Then I sorted them into years. I think I've now learned a tad bit, not nearly enough, but I think I'm going to go through them one last time and count them at the same time (especially after reading Vic's post) and will cash on my 80's, 90's, and 2000's. I'm gonna keep my earlier ones as well as the 2009's (as they're low mintage). But yeah, there's always that constant worry that I'll learn something new and kick myself in the ass afterward.
Now that's a story and I wish I could reply more. I will be tallying my total before cashing in future so I know if its a good machine in the future. Edit: Thank you for sharing.
LoL, I bought a 100 sandwich bags from Tarje (as my wife likes to call it; Target), use a Sharpie to label, and a couple of Tupperware boxes to store them in.
If you suspect the counting machine at your bank is not counting your change properly call your local sealer of weights and measures. As a counting or measuring device it is covered under weights and measures by many states. Most municipalities do not test them on a regular basis but will check them out if asked. I know because I have had to check several over the past year. Richard
sorry, but I assume that is just circ coinage? Then, she is right, but you should exchange it and NOT give it to her for spending.... You saved it, then it is yours.
Since I save all the coins that I get, and I have several thousand dollars in pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters in inventory. I do a lot of shopping with an ATM card, credit card, or on-line. Thus, I get very little change out of circulation these days. Most of the coins are from over 10 years ago.
Has this happened to you? I searched a box of halves and dimes this weekend with the kids. Had a fun time and found a little bit of silver. I have all of the change in a canvas mint bag. I place it on the floor of the my car on the rear driver side. I'm careful as the bag is full this week and place it in a great location so it won't tip over. On my way to work a car pulls in front of my and I hit the skids. Next thing you know dimes and halves fall over and a half a bag ends up under my seat. Some even mad there way to the gas pedal under my feet. Nothing like picking 2500 dimes up from under your seat.
Remind me never to get married if im ever thinking about it please. I leave my coins laying around till I need the money for more, then I cash em in. Best of luck with the stealer, I mean wife
I inspect all of mine with my stereo microscope and then dump whatever isn't worth anything. It keeps me busy! lol
