I didn't have any luck with the 10 1965 SMS Sets I bought.

It's a crap shoot...but then again.some unscrupulous dealers can buy Unopened envelopes and restuff them with sets he's already picked thru...then seal them.

Interesting purchase. What are you looking for? cameo coins?

My real reason for the purchase is cameo coins but I am really looking for a Ultra Cameo Roosevelt!! Also some 50C errors would be nice (no fg, DDO).

Can anyone confirm that the mint set envelopes were actually SEALED by the Mint, back in the day?

I bought 3 mint sets and all sets were beautiful. They were all separate buys, I didn't buy 3 sets at once. The envelopes are dated and there's also a dated insert in the envelope. Yes ebay has some sleazy sellers but I really doubt that some actually reseal envelopes. In answer to your question, no nobody can say for certain that the seal was done by the us mint, back in the day.

Date? I've gone through more than 200 "sealed" proof sets this year. Other than the year indicated on the envelope and insert there was no actual date. I found the inserts of the 1960-1961 sets to be marked 1960 and 1962-1964, marked 1962. The coins were in great condition and up to 1970, no cameos. It's much easier/cheaper to buy the cameos from someone who has already done the work.

This post always reminds me of all the proof and uncirc sets I get from the Mint every year. None ever get opened. I always say I will open them tomorrow but then the next year ones come out and still never get around to opening them. I did open a few not long ago when I saw a post about a closed or open S on some of them or something like that. I looked but couldn't tell so just put them back in the really big box of them. Some day I'll open them all, maybe.

I bought 3 "unopened" proof set 1959, 1961, 1963 on EBay months ago. Most coins have cloudy white spots on surface. I couldn't return since I opened them. Should not have paid premium for those sets. :headbang:

I have purchased 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1961, 1962, and 1964 unopened proof sets on ebay. I purchased them a couple of years ago before I had the opportunity to join this site. I still haven't opened them. I'm thinking that I will do it on my death bed.

I don't know how you guys do it. I wouldn't be able to sit back and let years pass by without opening the envelopes. That's like waiting till after Xmas to open Xmas gifts. :D

Well, I must have issues. I'm sitting on a bunch of coin rolls from the mint that I haven't even opened the box yet. I'm also the idiot who has the presidential cover series still in the white envelopes. If it makes you feel better, I did open one of my Chronicle Sets, one of my silver proof sets, one of my clad sets, and one of my mint sets. I need something for my death bed. I could be there for awhile.

That's funny!! I have a roll of 2009 Sacagawea's I haven't opened yet but I was referring to old mint sets that I was thinking you got off of ebay. I guess you just want to hang onto something. Nothing wrong with that, after all there yours. :thumb:

This is a very confusing thread. The OP says he got 10 sets, but the auction was for 40 sets.

The auction is clearly for UNOPENED BOXES of SMS sets from 1966 and yet almost everyone is talking about whether the envelopes were sealed or not???

Jeez. Buy the book and don't pay any attention to forum chatter.

    I said I didn't have any luck with (10) 1965 SMS sets.

    So I bought (40) 1966 SMS Sets.

I also asked if anyone had any luck with unopened proof sets. Since I consider SMS as proof sets.
