The second of the Roman Provincial coins I bought lately with an eye on the reverse. Though a bit worn, is has an appealing movie-like patina: two shadows engaged in a talk with gestures, the shadow in the doorway... One of the things I most like about it, is its date, albeit with a question mark in RPC. I'm fascinated by coins nearing the Year Zero.

    1709 Pergam ect.jpg

Augustus, AE20 Pergamum in Mysia, about 1 AD. Kephalion, grammateus. Homonoia issue with Sardis. Obv. Demos of Pergamum to right, crowning Demos of Sardis to left with wreath. ΠΕΡΓΑΜΗΝΩΝ / ΚΑΙ / ΣΑΡΔΙΑΝΩN. Rev. Distyle temple, containing facing statue of Augustus. CEBACTON ΚΕΦΑΛΙΩΝ ΓΡΑΜΜΑΤΕΥΩΝ. 20 mm, 4.52 gr. RPC I, 2362.

The first coin that I recently bought for its reverse. My only other coin nearing the Year Zero.

There is no year zero in either the Julian or Gregorian calendar. 1 BC is followed by AD 1.

Side observation: cool patina on that, too.

It is a shame. So many people born during that time are now non-peoples. :)

    Oh, the HUMANITY!

So there was kind of a lost year in there (between 0 and 1 AD. ;)

Very cool new (slightly used) coin!
I recently bought this one! Thanks for linking the other example. I had no idea about the year.

Neither had I, only when I read the description a bit better after the coin had arrived (from Naumann). It was a pleasant surprise...
