Some Type Set Sizes

I got curious about how various groups define a type set not including gold.
So I did my best to count the number of coins in type sets by:
    - Dansco (7070)
    - NGC (Registry type set 1964 and before)

I wanted to compare them with how I defined my type set.

Dansco's type set appears to require 63 coins (not counting a page labeled Modern Coins).

The NGC Registry Set requires 97 coins.

My type set stands at 79 coins with an outside possibility of 2-3 more.
But I include one variety that NGC doesn't. Just a personal preference.

Someone may want to survey PCGS to add to this.

The PCGS set that's closest to these would be the "Complete U.S. Coin Design Set, No Gold (1792-present)". It requires 58 coins. It's very streamlined compared to the NGC Registry Type Set that matches Dansco 7070. For example Indian Head Cents have a single entry - Indian Cent 1859-1909.

I'd find it interesting if you could tell us what you have defined for your type set.

That's the NGC Registry Type Set through 1964 (97 coins)
    BUT
they don't include the "0.01 Coronet (new design)".
    I don't know why not.

I have 78 of the coins from their listing PLUS the one they don't include.
Not surprisingly all the ones I'm missing are the early ones.
Because of the grades I want, I can kiss off almost all of the ones I don't have.

No Lincoln Memorial? No copper coated Lincolns? Now you also have the 4 new Lincolns to add.

Not sure I understand what you are looking for, is it simply just a comparison of different type set definitions?

You could break it up into 18th Century, 19th Century and 20th Century type sets.

The comparison is between pre-defined type sets: Dansco 7070, NGC Registry and PCGS Registry.
But people can define their type set any way they wish.

Nope, at least not in my type set.
Mine ends at 1964 (the end of 90% silver strikes in the US).

True. And what about those silly looking Jefferson ones with him looking at you. One of each State Quarter? Actually such a tye set could expand massively.
So where do you put those? Are they all in 2x2's? In those 20 holder of 2x2's and then in a3 ringed binder? All in a box? On display? Of course some would put them all in a jar. :goofer:

Art - thanks for the input. There's only ONE "Lincoln Cent", although there are about 10 different reverse designs, designers initials, metal content, etc. The name of these is not the "Memorial reverse cent", the "Steel Cent", the "VDB cent", etc. The MAJOR DESIGN type of this coin is Lincoln, and minor design types are those others, right? I haven't seen the NGC registry of types, but will look at it in the next couple of days. Thanks for the good discussion. Ted in Cumming (GA).

    37 & 38-O Dime

My Dansco 7070 doesn't have a hole dedicated for the no-stars dime. The no-star is one of my favorites so I fit one into the first seated dime position.

Yeah, I know - they (Dansco) are very inconsistant. How do they deem a 1909 vdb is a type, but not the no stars dime - or the arrows liberty seated? That's why I've finally settled on Dansco "U.S. Types" binders with 12-pocket vinyl pages for my coins in self-adhesive 2x2 - total flexibility, a neat appearance, I can add what text I want, if any, etc. On we go. Thanks, Ted in Cumming, GA.

All the coins in my type set are in slabs, either NGC or PCGS.
Have to be if I want to do a NGC Registry Set.
Physically they are stored in Eagle Certified Coin albums, then in this BIG metal box down the street.
That's why I image them all. Then I can still do a show and tell.

It is a nice set. Doesn't anybody watch kanga's posts???:) I believe most have been posted and they are very sweet coins and I can imagine a very nice set to view next to each other.

So very many are into type sets but I just never could get interested. I've got one of those 20th century ones filled and put away. haven't even looked at it for about 10 or more years. Sure would be interesting to see some but not for me. :D

    You've got that right.
That coin and all its "relatives" from about 1793 to 1807 are the ones missing from my type set.
I already have a 1798 cent and I should pick up a 1795 half cent this weekend at the Whitman show.
Plus I have an 1806 half cent and an 1807 half dollar.
That's it for my older coins.
Maybe(?) I can pick up 2-3 more down the line, especially if I bend my standards a bit. Some are a bit affordable.
