It's a bronze medal that the U.S. Mint made in 2007. For the Presidents that were bachelors when they were sworn in, the U.S. Mint made a bronze medal and gold coin depicting Lady Liberty as she appeared at that time instead of the First Lady. Presidents Jefferson, Jackson, Van-Buren, and Buchanan were all bachelors, so the Mint made designs with Lady Liberty instead. The "First-Spouse" series was struck from 2007 to 2016 with a special issue made in 2020 to commemorate First Lady Barbara Bush, who died in 2018.

I had to put a bib on because of my drooling. I'd love to get a closer look at the Norway 50 Øre as a start.

My LCS has huge bags of world coins and you can fill up a box and sort through them, pick out the ones you want and they charge very little for them. I once bought a lot of 3 lbs of world coins with a guranteed silver coin. To my delight it wasn't a coin, but a French jeton from 1783, it remains one of my favorite silver pieces to this day.

Wow, @Eric the Red. I'd sure like to dip my warm, sticky little fingers in that pot at your LCS.

I'm amazed at how many on these and other forums are into Ancient/Foreign Coins.

We have problems getting people involved in coin collecting of American coins, and somehow, a good number are into foreign and ancients.

Now...it could be that rather than novices coming into the hobby that most of this interest is long-time coin collectors gravitating into foreigns/ancients because they are just interested in the type or maybe because they see long-term value in the sector (cheap compared to other sectors). Or both. Or neither. Whatever.

Anyway, I'm surprised by the level of interest. Mazel Tov ! :D

This is me as one data point.

I've been collecting since I was 12 (and over 40 now), but got into world coins about 5-6 years ago for the above reasons you describe. It's essentially neverending fun and diversity.

Here's two I got for silver value about 2 yrs ago:

I still collect US coins, but have narrowed the targets significantly - I have a Standing Liberty quarter long term hold collection and working on a type set album.

Hello my friends. I still haven't gone through the World Coin stash lol. This is on my "2022 coin to do list"

Can anyone recommend any good World Coin books or websites? Thanks in advance.

Would recommend Numista. Just type in what you read on the coin and it should pop up, you can tell based off the pictures and info. I forgot about this thread but looking at it agin, there’s some nice old foreign coins in there. Good luck!

I'd love to have a big random assortment to go through, kinda like treasure hunting.

Numista has proven a great resource for me, I also picked up a digital copy of the Krause catalog off ebay for a reasonable fee that I like.
