Hi, I am looking at a local dealer who has this same NGC PR 70 Set for $137.00. http://www.auctiva.com/hostedimages...221528997&images=221528997&formats=0&format=0 Just wondering why these sets are going so cheap as price guides show the coins in PR 70 much higher priced individually. Thanks....
Because the price guides are worthless. My personal opinion, the coins aren't even worth the $137. They are common place. Go buy yourself an original Proof Set for a fraction of that and have the same thing.
That's not even a complete proof set. Where are the state quaters? Are you talking $137 for that one lens? (RIP OFF) or are the State Quarters included in MS70 as well? (BETTER DEAL).
Rip-off city!! What would someone do with that, at that price!! I am with Doug on this one!! If you want that year just get a 2003 proof set. :thumb:
For many moderns and ultramoderns Teletrade, Ebay, Heritage will have auction results to see what the going rate is. Teletrade doesn't show a full 2003 set, but does have a few of the individual coins. $6 for the dime, $24 for the half, $33 for the dollar (a person has to factor in fees and shipping for buying on Teletrade). Maybe figure in $20 for the cent, $10 for the nickel, and $130+ does sound a bit high, though not totally out of line if PF70 is what a person wants. Obviously not that many on this forum want PF70. However, I always tell folks to collect what they like, not what someone else like's. That said, the price is on the high side for coins of similar quality, though with grading fees and shipping, it is not that easy to replicate the PF70 set at the $130 price. Raw sets may or may not approach the same quality. I suggest that for folks that can't tell the difference in grades, best to save the money and buy a decent looking coin in the lower grade, instead of buying a number on a label that a person can't discern for themselves.
Unless this is some special year to you and you really want it that bad, I'd pass on this. Or, negotiate a cheaper price. You might be surprised what the dealer would take for it. I'd offer $80. Most here would probably say it still isn't worth that. Clad proof sets just aren't that rare. Some PF70s aren't worth the premium to me. Most of them aren't in fact. Although I do own a few.
DON'T GET IT. Only if it is important to you. Investment wise I don't see any increase of value for this one.
When it comes to proof or uncirc sets there are many collectors that want the entire set. Some prefer to pay more for such sets if in the original package and box. Ever watch the Antique Road Show? Usually even toys demand a larger price when in the original package. This set has been opened, separted and now the rest of the set, those lousy quarters are in another similar separate set. Some dealers do sell each individual coins for individuals that need them to complete an Album. And in defense of that coin dealer he does have to make a large profit to pay for store expenses and enough too for his family. You know that Ferrari his kids needs to get to school.
Ahhhh! Another problem! Those are just as big as a rip off! Look at a PR69 and a PR70 ASE and tell me the difference, with the naked eye....You can't. Don't waste your money on them...if you want ASE's buy them raw.
Maybe some folks can't tell the difference. However, there are collectors that can see the difference, and have proven it, and enjoy collecting PF70 coins. There are plenty of collectors that struggle with grading and not just on PF69 to PF70 on ultramoderns. It might be MS63 to MS64 on Morgan dollars or VF vs. XF on some other series. For these collectors that struggle with grading, it is suggested to err towards the lower grade and the lower price until they can tell the difference for themselves. This has more meaning when the price for the coin goes up dramatically for that one grade higher. If a person can't tell the difference for PF70 with consistency, they probably will enjoy the hobby more by buying the lower grade coins at the lower price. Moving from a 2003 proof set to eagles and staying at the PF70 grade won't help if the person can't determine that grade for themselves.
