for new collectors, try to buy u.s. modern commemorative coins dated from 1983 to 1988. these coins were selling near its bullion value. you can own these at an affordable price and you can even hold it and play with it. what a fun?. unlike other valuable coins. you have to seal it, capsule it and keep it at safe forever.

    Modern commems

some of the modern commems design that i liked were:

dollar: 1983 olympic obverse, 1986 statue of liberty obverse, 1987 constitution reverse, 1988 olympic reverse, 1989 congress obverse, 1991 mt. rushmore obverse & reverse, 1992 columbus obverse, 1992 white house reverse, 1994 u.s.capitol reverse, 2000 leif ericson reverse, 2000 am buffalo oberve & reverse, 2001 capitol visitor reverse, & 2004 lewis & clark obverse.

half dollar: 1982 washington obverse, 1989 congress obverse, 1991 mt. rushmore obverse & reverse, 1992 olympic obverse, 1992 columbus obverse & reverse, 1995 basketball obverse, 1995 baseball obverse, 1995 civil war obverse & reverse,

five dollars: 1986 statue of liberty obverse, 1987 constitution obverse, 1988 olympic obverse, 1991 mt. rushmore obverse, 1992 columbus obverse, 1992 olympic reverse,

ten dollars: 1984 olympic reverse, 2000 library of congress reverse.

note: none of these design can match the american silver eagle obverse & reverse. amercan gold eagle obverse, and platinum bullion coin obverse & some reverse.

    u.s. commems

the mint selling modern commems at $33.00 for unc. and $35.00 for proof. it seems the unc version is expensive. the presentation case for proof is at least $2.00 (more) than a box for unc. so the price is equal.. but it cost more to produce the proof coins. so unc coins for modern commems is expensive. maybe the mint knew that unc sold fewer and the price after the mint stop selling is always higher than the proof. so the mint just increase the price of unc. and the public are not aware of.

    modern commems

buy modern commems only with complete and original mint packaging. sleeves, box, c.o.a. must be neat and clean. coin should be in perfect brilliant condition. and nowadays, it seems hard to find one. the price for this complete packaging should be 25% to 50% over the current dealer's price. why? the coins sell by dealers were simply coin in capsule. and if you look furthermore. the coin may be ms 60 for unc and proof 63 or less for proof version. well, for those who keep the coin just like you bought it from the mint. it quarantee to be ms 63 to ms 65 for unc. and proof 65 or over to proof coin. think about it.

    modern commems

1991 mt. rushmore and 1992 columbus dollars were the best designed for both obverse and reverse. and even the half dollars too.

    modern commems

now that the some of the modern commems were so cheap. i bought few that i can touch and feel the beauty of it. i can play and turn the coin upside down. throw it and enjoy it. i virtually put these few coins (4 pc) into being circulated and with dirt and scratches. i also plan to put one in my old key chain with coin holder. at $8.00 a piece. total loss is $32.00. but bullion recovery is $23.80 (based on $7.83 per ounce). so i only loss $8.20 and i have fun.
