Howdy, All! I’m learning about coins and this is my second post. Fun stuff! I found a dime that appears to have what I believe is machine doubling. That’s pretty common, yes? Are there a few other things going on, too? The edge looks like maybe a bit misaligned, or “railroad rim”? I am learning about all these things if someone can help me determine what I am seeing in this example. I appreciate it. Forgive my ignorance as I read about these things and develop a beginner’s understanding of not just what these terms mean but what examples look like on various coins. Also, as I practice roughly grading what I see, would I be right in describing it as XF? Thanks!
Welcome to the neighborhood, Jacob. It looks like it is a mis-aligned die (MAD). These will always have one side perfectly centered like the reverse while the other side is off-center like the obverse. I'm the "book learning" type, so I prefer to have the reading material for reference while others, here, prefer to use the online resources. Two books that can be helpful to you are:
It's a MAD or misaligned die strike. You can see that by looking at the rim on the obverse. As for Doubling I can't see it. No added value for the MAD.
Misaligned die. Neat! Thank you for the book references, too, Cpm9ball Thanks, collectingnut and cpm9ball for the note on checking the rim of the obverse to compare. As for machine doubling, is that what I am seeing at the edges of the letters and even some on the design by his hair and nose edge, where there is multiple ridges?
Welcome to Coin Talk. IMO your coin would probably grade VF 25 at the most. Until you can buy some books, here's a few online resources to help. For Grading: https://www.pcgs.com/photograde To look up error loins: http://www.error-ref.com/ There's websites for just about everything related to coins. You'll learn which ones are needed as you continue to learn. Have fun.
