Hello ladies and gentlemen, This would be the last coin that puzzles me today. The seller (not skilled in ancient coins) offered it almost for free since I bought 6 other coins from him. But this makes me scratch my head. 0.49 g 11.1 mm, silver. The note (from a previous collector) states just GELA. The reverse is not something I recognize, I can only guess it is a man faced bull, but I can't find any MFB coins from Gela with a portrait on the obverse. Any ideas, please?
Complete ancient coin noob here, but it kinda looks like this guy to me. With the wavy hair and beard everything... When I look up GELA, Sicily shows up so this link might help? https://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/sicily/gela/i.html
Unfortunately I can't see the image you posted, I see just this ... I already tried Wildwinds (great resource BTW) but I can't find a match.
Sorry about that, I don't know why either of us can't see it, I tried to fix it but no luck. Ill post an imgur link in its place. EDIT: Never mind, imgur is down right now. I'll try again later today.
I can’t make out any Punic letters for “SYS,” but it looks like a Panormos litra similar to this example: https://manfacedbullsar.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/614050.jpg Here's my example: Panormos AR litra 405-390 BC 0.7 gm O: male head left R: man-faced bull protome right; Punic "SYS" above Jenkins CPS I pl 24, 13; SNG ANS 550
This site on Magna Grecian coins is interactive and another great resource for coins of that region: http://www.magnagraecia.nl/coins/ Just click on the regions of the map and the city dots to see all the coinage for each city. While it's not entirely comprehensive it's still a lot better than the old Sear Europe volume.
