Jumped on a chance to pick up a couple sample prints by IBNC. They are both in rough condition and have not been treated very well in the past. I believe they date from the mid 1880s to 1907. So for a 100+ years old they really are not so bad. I hope you can see how raised the letters are in United States. Magnified this vignette is really nice! I don't know anything about the engravers yet but hope to learn more about both of them! The first is numbered 44 on top and is on a cotton like tissue paper 5"*3". The second is same paper on 6"*4". You can see the copywrite date on "the challenge" is 1884 and is printed as No.103. Hope you enjoy! If you happen to find see either of these in a reference book please drop me a note!
Great shots , I love Eagles ! ,I can't stop reading The Int. Eng. Line, I know nothing about the world of International Engravers, will take years to get good @ identifing them by their work . The Eagle Vignettes are great shots !
Yeah, if my copy ever ever comes in the mail, I have to drive 10km into town to check the post - but so far the nayther.
Sorry SM - no ladies to admire. Daggerjon, they were sold together and I really was more interested in the Eagle - until they showed up! The artwork on the USA is really sharp and I love how raised that orange ink is! The Eagle is everything I was hoping for and I am really happy to have both of them! Thanks connor! I have not had a spare minute to myself outside of work so it has been impossible to start researching these two pieces. I look forward to getting into my two reference books when time allows!
Those are some beautiful engravings Darryl... Things from days gone by... Thank you for sharing the images, get some noice frames for those babies!! RickieB
Thank you RickieB, Glad you like them. Will have to see what I can do for frames... Best Regards ~ Darryl
I am guessing Stocks but have yet to see it (which doesn't mean much )... I have seen the Eagle on one stock and one other marketing piece so far. I have a feeling it was used quite a bit by IBNC.
I picked up this interesting piece this week. It is a printed version of the original shown in the OP. While it doesn't come directly from the plate it is the same image. I will pick up an issued stock at some point that comes from the plate. A cool companion piece. Best Regards ~ Darryl
Interesting Darryl! I have that certificate, too, but didn't make the connection. I don't think it's an exact lithographic reproduction, it looks more like a crude copy. I like the original IBN vignette much better -- it's not one I've seen used intaglio anywhere I can think of, but I'll keep my eyes open. There are a bazillion gorgeous eagle vignettes from the various banknote firms. I'll post a few that American Bank Note compiled on a vellum sheet they used in one of their annual reports (two pages). There are also many others among the "Winged Majesty" sheets in the various ABNC Archive Series, but yours isn't among them.
Greg, I agree, same image but not from the original plate. Also agree the original was better. There are three out on ebay as we speak with the original die. Here is one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220542733320&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT Odd part is all three are the same seller and I cannot find a trace of the three companies. Not sure what the deal is. BR ~ D
I think these stock certifs were blanks, sold to local printers who printed the company name and fiduciary details inside the frame.
Typically, the banknote company would print the frame and vignette together, then the local printer would add the text in the center. Or sometimes the banknote company would add some generic text. Here are a couple examples. The eagle is from National Bank Note, the railroad is from ABNCo.
