So I found this NGC coin. Sorry for the horrible picture but it is the sellers picture. Dave's bust half dollar site says no evidence of an overton 111a exists. Yet here is one in a slab? I have purchased it and will now wait for it to arrive to examine it since this picture isn't very good, nor is the ngc picture on the website. I got the pictures from the NGC site and cropped. There definitely appears to be a die crack across the top of the cap. But I can't see the one that's supposed to be on the reverse in this picture. Screenshot_20210326-122704_Chrome.jpg Screenshot_20210326-122732_Chrome.jpg

Don't they call that the comet?or is it only for one date.

Idk but it seems like I ran across that name before relating to a capped bust half dollar. But idk if that's this one or not. I did find an auction history that called this variety an r7. But not sure if that's correct or not.

It's 111--for that matter, all 3 of the "111A"s sold through Heritage in the last ten years are actually 111s with the obverse crack but no reverse crack. There are at least a couple of true 111As known--Edgar Souders (of Bust Half Fever fame) had one.

As for the "Comet Head" that is the nickname of the 1817 O-106.

Yes it looked like the back crack was missing but the picture isn't very good. I actually bought another different coin not long ago that I couldn't see the obverse or reverse crack in the picture but when it got here both cracks were there. So then, is the designation ngc gave it wrong?

It seems that the TPGs (and and most collectors) have decided that the intermediate stage with the obverse crack only should be called the A state and have assigned an R-2 rating to it. I'll stick with the original designation.

Cool! The more I look at the pictures the more I like the coin. I got it pretty cheap. I think it could have sold for another hundred over what I paid.

You know I just went through the auction history at pcgs and none of the examples listed show the reverse crack. I looked at all the ngc and pcgs just now. They have the obverse only. And both services call them 111a. I didn't think to get screen shots while I was doing it. I did however, find a nice AU50 i wish I hadn't missed when it sold lol. There weren't many but there were 5 or 6 from both services.
