I was going through a roll of peace dollars and found what I thought was a real gem, but then I noticed a big scratch on her cheek. Darn. But after looking into it some more apparently it's a mint error, I think? I haven't been able to find much info, just some for sale. Does anyone know the story behind this? Is this just a scratch?
Thank you, I'm still working my way through this. I found it. Quick question, does this affect the grading? Or is it considered a normal part of the coin? https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1923-vam-1d-whisker-cheek/133755
Make sure it is exactly the same mark and there may be another pick up point (PUP) like small die scratches somewhere else in the coin that have to match exactly. Then I believe the mark itself doesn't affect the grade but other marks not associated with the VAM do. But I am not an expert on VAMs.
I can't tell from your image if it is or isn't for sure. If it's not it's an evil mimic contact mark. http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/wiki/1923-P_VAM-1D And welcome to CT!
