While roll searching half dollars for silvers and other rarities, I've also been picking out high quality coins and stacking by date for eventual inclusion in an album. I'm also wanting to keep in tubes maybe 10 or so extras for myself in each date and mintmark. I've gotten to the point where I have some dates with dozens of high quality coins and other with just a few, but in total I've got an awful lot of "extra" coins here! I really hate to doom these coins to the counting machine at my bank and was wondering what any of you fellow roll searchers do with your extra coins? Do any places buy complete sets of nice circulated coins? Rolls of single date and mintmark? Any other ideas of what to do with them? Or is it just not worth worrying about and back to the machines with them? Just curious what you guys do with your EF-AU extras. Cheers.
I usually spend them. I've never rolled half dollars and returned them to the bank. Makes you less than welcome with the tellers. PS - they make great tips if you eat out a lot.
Spend em', Sell em'...That is what I would do. I'd only sell them if they are silver and would get some nice cash though, or they are a really high grade (Which I doubt would happen, because you are getting them out of rolls, and odds are, they are all worn coins)
Have you tried your local coin club auctions? Maybe get a little more than face and help put more $$ into the club.
Oh, definately not returning rolls to the bank! I only have three branches of my bank in the area that I have to alternate between as it is to use their coin machine in the lobby. I think even that is starting to annoy them. I spend a few, but rarely use cash in general these days. Plus, we're talking more than I usualy spend in a couple months worth of coins here! Ya, I bet! I'm hoarding all the silver ones I can find with no intention of selling them. You know, end of times coming and all. Ya, they definately don't grade MS, but some are pretty close. Wasn't sure if people put a premium on pre-made sets. I don't really care about making money off selling them though, it's really more that now that I've gotten into this, I almost see it as a "sacred duty" or something to save and protect some of these things for future generations. Ya, that's kinda overkill, I know...true to an extent though. Your suggestion caused me to Google for local coin clubs of which I didn't know there were any or even think to look for them. Found one in Charlotte that meets not far from my house. I'll check them out in two weeks at their next meeting. Thanks for the suggestion.
why not try running a fun contest? Im sure alot of people here would love to have some coins that are just exrtas to others. maybe make it so alot of different people win a coin or 2. Im sure I could use an extra half dollar for my collection. Just make the winners pay for the postage. Just put em in a regular envelope and mail em. so the postage would be like 50 cents- Instead of giving them to a stranger, give em to a coin talk member-just a thought--BILL
