It's hard to tell from the pics, but it looks like they got it right. (If you can post some large pics, maybe using photobucket or a site like that). According to VAMWorld the some of the key identifiers besides the triangular ear are : So one thing to remember the "left wing" will be on your right hand side when looking at the reverse. One other thing, and this is just my opinion, but I believe there are a lot more smaller varieties that aren't listed for the 1878 P Morgans, and VAM 14.2 is a perfect example. I think it's been revised like 3 times, and they list it as having 2 reverses . Now that really doesn't make any sense to say it has 2 different reverses but it's one VAM, if by the definition a VAM is the unique pairing of an obverse and reverse die.
One more thing , I would expect a clash like that to be mentioned if it was common for the VAM 14.2, but it's not. Imo it's actually a pretty unique clash because it's from the top leaf of the olive branch on the reverse, and the only way to get the clash mark like that is for the olive leaves to be doubled. So it's pretty cool. Here's an overlay, you can see only the highest leaf of the branch would reach the eye. Just to check, is that leaf doubled on the reverse?
Here they are raider. Ck out the tail feather too.I not sure but it looks like 7/8? all you have to do to see a larger photo is click on image. Thanks you!!!
From the pics it looks like the coin matches VAM 14.2. The only thing I can't see from the pics, is the die scratch starting at the L in Liberty, but that doesn't mean it's not there. The only thing that bothers me is the clash mark in front of the eye, I would really expect that to be listed, but it's not. The clash is listed in another VAM though VAMworld - 1878-P VAM-14.1A So maybe it's as simple as the clash isn't listed, because the coin does match VAM 14.2, but I don't know why it wouldn't be listed. I would post some pics over on the VAMworld forum, and see what they have to say. I'd be interested in what they have to say about the clash. Btw, it doesn't look like the 7/8 tf variety, all but two of the 7/8 varieties show extra tailfeathers. The only two varities that don't are the 7/0 tf (VAMs 30 and 31), and your coin doesn't match those 2.
