I live in a very old town in SW Pa, and my interest in coins and collecting eventually led me to buy a metal detector. That was in 1976. I've had one ever since, though for periods of time it would just lay in the closet. I got interested again a couple years ago, and started hunting fields. These were dug in the past month. Nothing staggering...yet. The LC is an 1825. I dug 8 large cents this year...ranging from 1794 to 1838. Nightowl
Those are some very nice finds, congratulations!!! We have some old military installations around here from back in the 1850s-1860s Ive often wondered what I might find if I bought me a metal detector and go searching around those areas.
Anywhere there's been people....there's stuff in the ground. You never know what you may find. Nightowl
The mark on the seated liberty dime matches the radius of a Barber half perfectly. I believe the 2 barber halves, the seated dime, and the large cent may have been in the same coin purse. They were spread out by the plow...in a straight line (more or less) and I also recovered a silver buckle in the same general area...that may well have come from a coin purse.
I agree, some excellent finds. If you are considering getting a detector, I would first make sure the areas that you plan to detect in are not restricted. I was looking to get one myself, but all the areas that I wanted to detect at fell under the National Historic Preservation Act which makes it illegal to detect and remove artifacts. Just check and make sure that it is legal to detect in the areas you want to before making an investment
I got a detector about a year and a half ago, so far either the weather has not cooperated or I have not had time to do much. At our older home, which was built in 1933, I have found coins dated as early as 1917, but most coins curiously are dated in the 1950s.
Man those are some great finds. I started detecting a year or so ago and only dream of finds like those. Very cool. There is a new detecting forum you might check out and share your finds. click here
I really am hoping that I can score an early US silver coin. It seems completely feasible, since of the 8 Large cents I dug here this year...2 are lettered edge Liberty Caps. The newest one I have dug is a holed 1838. Nightowl
I spend a great amount of time at my condo overlooking the beach. Early in the morning I'll see a person with his detector doing the beach and not finding anything. Then an hour later here comes another person detecting over the same turf as the first person. Then one week there was a rarity where a third person would do the same thing. I guess I just don't have the patience for detecting.
I'd love to get one.......LOL......I used to make fun of guys who had them when I was young, now I want one........we come full circle. Great finds!
It's amazing that these coins were 'lost' when they were so valuable at the time. If I drop a penny, I usually know it, and it's not worth much....
Great finds Nightowl. Iam a native from PA now living in MI. We will have to get together and you can show me some hunting grounds... congrats lol lol Jerry
