We probably all have that one favorite coin that always brings a smile to look at, or hold, or share with others. What's yours and why? This one is a fairly recent acquisition that I just absolutely love! Why? 1. It's silver 2. It's a large crown sized coin 3. It's old 4. Fantastic design both sides 5. Sharply struck, clear date 6. It's one of the first forms of money used in America (Daalder became dollar)
It would have to be this one. I spent a lifetime enjoying a poor mans collection and only just a few years back allowed myself to indulge into some of the coins that I dreamed of my whole life. My favorite CT dealer, @C-B-D sold her to me for a song and it is my avatar. I actually spent the first couple of weeks carrying this coin around with me because I couldn't believe I owned it.... Probably shouldn't have said that LOL!!
I like my avatar, especially since my daughter is named Irene (I sure picked an expensive coin name for her). Others would be my Antony and Cleopatra tetradrachm, Christopher gold coin from Constantine VII, one of my many Vahran II "family" coins.
Mine is this 1783 Georvis Triumphos. Not pretty but I found it at the homesite (metal detecting) of Daniel McGirt who was an officer in the Revolutionary Army but went over to the British. After the war ended he could not go home and received a land grant from the Spanish king for land in NE Florida where he started a plantation and then became a highwayman ‘ pirate. The name means George Triumphed and was to honor Washington’s victory. It was minted in England but instead of putting Washington’s bust on it they put George III, who lost the war! It is the only Washington token to have actually been minted in 1783. The others show the date to recognize the Treaty of Paris which ended the war. It had very limited distribution and was known to have been used in Virginia, South Carolina and Jamaica. It was believed to have been in Florida but no proof was available. Around the same time as I found mine, another detectorist found one in St Augustine and we are credited with proving its use down here.
It's a common date coin, but it was one of my first major acquisitions for my Japanese Type album. Japan 1904 (Meiji 37) 1 Yen Ex-PCGS MS-61
This is one of my favorites. I have many I like, but this coin has always appealed to me, because of its beautiful toning. It is a common date, but uncommon in its eye appeal. I also dig the OGH a lot.
OGH is an Old green holder, from PCGS. This coin was graded years ago, and grading back then was quite a bit tighter than it is now. One sided toning? End roll toning, one side textile toning. Any of a few reasons.
