I Don't Get It - Marked Bank Rolls?

Got a bundle of quarter rolls from the bank, all machine rolled. On one side each roll was marked (which I detest and consider sloppy coin care) - however inside I found several very nice quarters including a 1981 S. Why would someone deface these coins like that? Those almost look like they were rewrapped after being searched.

Some people have to reroll their coins to return. I know a guy who searches quarters and he rerolls them. Time consuming for sure.

Makes sense in this case though. They've been rerolled so you mark the top coin to know if you get them back.

Looks like marking an item as they count. The bunch could have been part of a larger lot. We only have so many fingers and toes.

As a roll searcher i do the same thing but never thought rewraping BWRs were possible,I just get normal wraps from my bank and do it.They must be sort of bad then to let that beauty slip pass.

If you get your finger in the opening part, you can definitely unwrap those BWRs. It's annoying but possible.
That is a really nice proof.
It also could be like what @Numiser said, a way for them to count something too.
Who knows...only the person who did it. One of life's little mysteries lol.

I've gotten marked rolls inadvertently when asking for halves at the bank. Instead of making a scene with the teller(who is happy to get rid of them and prays you don't bring them back) I take them, open the rolls and dump them at another financial institution.

And being courteous pays off. I have found a few 40% halves with darker edges that appeared as though they were missed because the previous roll searcher missed them.

    Exactly.
I always take what they are willing to give. I smile and say thank you and then dump somewhere else.

I couldn't figure out what you meant until I saw the picture. I think you meant, "On one end each roll was marked."

Is every coin marked or just those ends? If just those ends, is there marker on the paper? If there’s not any marker on the paper and they’re the only coins marked then they were marked before they were rolled and then put on the ends. Strange to say the least.

Could be a identification marker of some kind. Whom ever did it is not a coin collector, in my opinion.

Why not just mark on the wrappers? I don't like this marking either, and have come across many of the same. Nice finds otherwise!

I got a box of halves once and maybe 30% of the coins had a black stripe on them. I am guessing that another CRH marked them after he examined them for silver, varieties, or errors so next time he gets them he knows not to bother to look at them.

When I did re-roll my dimes to search for silver ones I would mark the roll with a Bart Simpson stamp in purple ink to let me know if I got that roll again. I would never mark the coins themselves.

Even a permanent marker should come off without damaging the coin. I usually just put a pencil X on the wrapper so I know I've been through it.

I have seen BWRs like that, but without the marking. From the looks of the paper wrapping I think those rolls might be a quarter short, and someone marked them as such. And I'm not just talking about the loose paper that didn't get crimped over. There is too much space between the outside end of the paper roll, and even the inside of the crimp, and the first coin.

A roll of clad quarters is about 227g, give or take a gram depending on the amount of paper and the condition of the coins. I pre-weigh all rolls (BWR & CWR) I get, and set aside those that are heavier (229g or more - might contain silver or an extra coin) or lighter (223g or less - probably short a coin). I check those first. Sometimes a wrong denomination coin will make a smaller difference. I once found 5 BWRs that were short a quarter - bad Quality Control. And I've been 2 coins over or under on some CWRs.

I re-wrap all rolls, which my Credit Union requires for returns. After re-wrapping each roll I weigh it too - if not 226-228g (for quarters) I probably counted wrong. And like Mountain Man, I put a penciled X on the wrapper. The CU knows to not give those back to me later.

I have encountered this on one purchase from the bank. When I go to a bank and purchase coins for "roll hunting" after I search the coins I re-wrap them and mark the OUTSIDE of the wrapper with a red line, this way if I go back and they offer me the same rolls I ask them to give me others that do not have the red line on the wrapper. It works and saves re-checking the rolls you previously checked.
