Retiring from SemiKey/Key Date Coins after next month..

    Hi all,

I've been sick with a very unexpected cold these past few days(which is rare because I never get sick), and with that at hand, I have solidified a decision a few weeks in the making to finally call an end to high end coin purchasing after the month of December. Dec 3 being my birthday.

What that means is, I will be allocating any oncoming money made in the markets to other investments, savings, or heck, even some classes.

I'm 24, still young, a few credits short of a degree, and have the heart and passion of an entrepreneur. Where I will allocate any additional funds I make aside from coins is beyond me.. Maybe I'll just save it for a rainy day.

I still will be into coins, I'll still be posting frequently here, and hope to dabble in lower end coins here and there.

The major focus of this move is to help out the younger newer people of the forum get started with a direction on what coins I think would be best for them to invest in.

Thanks for all of your support and from this post on, expect a new me that is just here to give back more or less, not one who will take much more value from the board.

    Might I also add,

It's been one heck of a ride, and me being the Reagan Republican I am, "you ain't seen nothin yet.."

I've been taught by arguably some of the smartest minds this industry has to offer(The Penny Lady, Doug, Mark Feld, Illini420, etc) and owe a debt of gratitude to each and every one of you for taking the time and your energy out to help me become the more informed collector/investor I am today.

Not only have I learned a lot about key/semi key date coins, I have also learned a little about grading, buying, and selling with dealers, etc.

I think during my retirement, while my vision is to help others get a leg up in this industry through an "investing" / "loving the coin you own" side, I will also read deeper and practice my skills as a grader since that was what hurt me on my last purchase with the 1921-D Walker.

    BNB,

with all due respect, while I think your intentions are noble, I would suggest that you learn what to invest in and how to be successful at it before you start to teach others.

    Sorry, but some tough love...

Oh, I knew that would come.. But you know what, it's okay.. I feel everyone has something to offer.

Maybe I can't at this moment teach someone grading 1-2-3's, but I can surely tell them my experiences thus far and the mistakes and lessons I've made.

My point is, anyone with more than a month of experience has something important to say. Whether it is just about what they've learned thus far or the mistakes they have made. It doesn't have to be all that advanced.

    Yes it will.

And thanks for that entertaining compliment.

I act while I'm here in L.A so the zany, quirky nature comes with the territory!

    Hmm..

Well, retiring from a hobby and retiring from a career are stark concepts.

    Thanks, let me just re-iterate.

    I am not leaving coins.

I am leaving the art of buying expensive coins.

I am still going to be an active poster here and I may even dabble in lower end coins / sets.

Financially, this is probably the smartest move I can make. Thankfully, I wasn't financially damaged by all this high buying either so it all worked out well.

The only expensive coins I can see myself buying in the future are from the mint and that is hoping gold doesn't hit $1,500 by that time.

    ummmm..let me get this right..

You are not buying any more expensive coins... but now you will buy coins from the mint at up to $1500...

3 months of learning here at CT??

Sir I really do not know you nor your background, but 3 months in this arena is considered still wearing diapers.
Now I am not trying to poke fun at you by any means..but you make it hard not to.

What I think what we have here is the failure to communicate! By professing to help others in getting the right start, you could be setting yourself up for litigation!

You sure would not like Paper Money from that regard...

I pretty much retired from coins from about age 14 until about age 26 (with the exception of buying annual proof and mint sets). Girls and school took the majority of my time and money at that time ;)

Remember, the higher-end stuff will still be here when you're ready to jump back in. But yeah, despite what some of the folks here may say, there are actually other things to deal with in life besides coins :)

Also, even if you're no longer buying higher end stuff, you can still look! You live in SoCal where there are tons of shows, including the Long Beach shows where Heritage auctions off some of the best of the best three times a year. If I were you I'd still be heading to Long Beach when you can to look at the Heritage lots as there are some true rarities there that you can check out and help further your coin education and grading skills in the process.

And all of us who have been collecting for more than a few minutes have gained experiences that are worth sharing with others. As long as BNB doesn't hold himself out to be an expert numismatist, I'm sure he has a gained quite a bit of first hand experience in the past few months that could be of value to someone just starting out.

    Good luck!!

Indeed everyone does. I look forward to your sharing of experiences with us.

I don't know what you knew would come, but if I offended you, it was never my intention but rather to help you. I can be blunt at times, but always with the intention of helping people to understand before they make the next mistake.

    No no,

I am done with expensive coins for the time being..

But of course by mid next year the mint will have something new and I'm sure I will balk at it then.. Who knows.. But for now, I'm done.

Not offended, but I knew someone would say I am not experienced enough to be teaching..

I am sorry I never made that clear.

I am sharing, not teaching at this point. I want to contribute.

Wow, you seemed very confrontational here, Vess1. It wasn't really necessary to rebuke those statements I made. I was just trying to be nice.

By the way, I don't have that 3 legger anymore, I sold it months ago and I did already hold a contest as a way of giving back.

There's no reason anyone should be giving anyone grief in this world. We should just live in peace, all get along, and live happily ever after. That's why I made this post not to take jabs at each other.

So was I. I wasn't being serious about half of it. Take a chill pill man. I wasn't being confrontational at all. I guess you just don't like me.

Well, I'm off to hold hands and sing kumbaya with someone else now. :vanish:
