Hey everyone, Well today I bought my first morgans. I got 5 of them and I have been going trough them. Could anyone give me a grade hint for my refrence it has this frozt look to it. And also if you see anything odd with the lettering as it seems to be doubled but as I have been shot down sooooo many times before I´ll leave it to the pro´s As alwasy i´m greatfull for your input. Helps me get better at what I love. Siggi
Hard to guess the grade from the scans, plus the weak strike. But it looks like it's around a high XF to low AU. As for the doubling it's pretty common, but it looks like VAM 11 to me VAMworld - 1885-O VAM-11 Congrats on your first Morgan btw.
Thank you, I really like the over all look of the coin. Can you tell me if the vam adds any price to a coin like this ? As I got 5 morgans i´m going over all of them. I have this 1902 O. The S in states has this piece missing. Any idea ? Also this O in the 1890 does that look at all odd ?
For the '85 O it's a common VAM (I-2 R-3) so I doubt it would bring any premium. I'm not sure exactly what happened with the S on the 1902 O, my guess is some type of post mint damage (maybe a small hit), mainly because the metal next to the area seems to be pushed out slightly. Good luck with the attributions, it can be fun, and also frustrating . *Btw the O looks normal.
Thanks again, The 1902 in god we trust is doubled. So is that a common thing with morgans ? Also another picture of the S, wouldnt you see more damage were it was struck like the rim of the hole ?
Doubling is common for many Morgan dates, just see how many 1902 O VAMs have doubling in the title VAMworld - 1902-O VAMs . So while the doubling is going to be a characteristic of the VAM it is, but it probably won't be a key indicator. So for instance, I see the doubling on the motto, but for the 1902 O there are a number of VAMs that have doubling on the motto, so I couldn't be sure exactly what VAM it is. As for the S, it looks like just post mint damage to me. On a mint state coin the hit would probably be much easier to identify, but as it circulates it tends to dull it out, and blend into the design. And besides that, I wouldn't know what else would cause an incuse error like that besides a struck through, and imo it doesn't look like a struck through either.
I see, There are two things that bugs me about that S. Iniside the S the flat surfece gives the same kind of shine as all the other flat surfece surounding it. Wouldnt the surfece had a different texture ? I have seen countless hits on coins with my microscope and it always leaves a different texture " hope i´m making sense to you " Siggi The S is on the obverse on the coin
